OK, a new one for me...
We have all had to deal with "expert" input from the non-kilted public now and then, and they are usually variations on same themes about tartans, regimental, etc... But I had a new one at the pub last night!
One of the waitresses was telling me how much she liked my kilt, (for the record, I was sporting the Bluebonnet tartan, with green hose, red flashes and green shirt) and after the initial pleasantries she leans in and says "you should wear some white socks though" !?!
I half expected to see a bunch of Xmarkers jump out of hiding! After I figured out she meant it, I asked "what? you don't like like my socks?" And she says "they look nice, but, you know, those bagpipe guys wear those big white socks" I guess her whole experience with guys in kilts was seeing "those bagpipe guys" every once and a while, so there's where that info came from!
I assured her that kilt hose came in lots of colors, and (for simplicity's sake) that white ones where mostly for pipe bands. She seemed OK with that, and I got a free pint!
Up till then the most interesting interaction that night was with two jeans wearing Scotsmen who asked my wife how long I'd been in Houston, and seemed disappointed when she said four generations!

Like in Monty Python when someone would say, "What do you think this is the Spanish Inquisition?"

No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Or possibly imposing her high school dress code... or just being girly.
I'm afraid I've turned to the use of duplicity in these cases, I mean the ones where the advisor is obviously totally uninformed about the tradition they think they are quoting- I fix them with a stern look and say "Some may do that, but my clan forbids the use of {pink bowties} or whatever the overhelpful person thinks is more correct.

Well, that's one of the things our big brains do, form beliefs from minimal info.
I'll say, I had the same belief in my early days of kilt wearing, based on the same sort of limited observations. The first pair of kilt hose I ever owned were off-white!

Seeing as how there's no picture of the waitress, I don't believe it ever happened.

I spite of what you have seen, I do not carry a camera around every hour of the day!
