I didn't want to hijack the "show us your kilt pins" thread with this question, but I've seen a number of mourning brooches on ebay, and I was wondering what the thoughts were on using one for a kilt pin? Due to the original purpose of these pins, they are almost all black, or at least very dark in color. I have seen a few in carved bog oak that I think would really show up well on a light colored tartan.
In the UK, they were often made from jet, which is very hard, or from coal, which is very fragile. Strangely, the coal ones were often carved by miners as sweetheart brooches. I have one made from jet and white metal that I wear with my Loud MacLeod. I see nothing wrong with them. Regards Chas
