Looking at it again, it kind of reminds me of a marching band uniform...and I agree it gives a youthful "punk" look to it.

Could the zipper be removed and replaced with a button-type closure?

My thoughts exactly! In my head I could hear the Imperial March being played by the Sith High School Marching Band.

I think the zipper is distracting more than anything. It's a dark jacket, so it just draws attention to itself. If it wouldn't work to remove it, maybe just replace it with a black one so there isn't this strip of chrome running down the center of a jacket that is pretty muted, but in a cool way.

I couldn't wear it. I'm not that old, but I have crows feet, am completely bald on top and have silver hair in my goatee. If I get Botox, Rogaine and Just For Men I might give it a whirl though.

Yeah...my daughter and I were at an H&M this morning and saw a similar jacket and she suggested that it might make a good kilt jacket for me.
My reply was about the same: on a younger guy, fer sure...on fifty-somethin' me, not really.

I tried that same jacket on today at H&M and I can confirm that your daughters eye is quite sharp. This one is also made of cotton but it has hook and eye closures instead of the zipper on the first one:

I'm sure the zipper could be replaced with a hook and eye closure like the H&M jacket I posted above. But regardless, they're not a formal jacket anyway, given that both jackets are made from cotton?

Sith HS Marching Band!!! That's a good one. My first thought (since I can't sew anything) was to just spray paint the zipper black... I'm not sure how old is too old--probably more an attitude thing than anything--but I don't see me pulling it off. Even more to the point, and let's be VERY honest, my WIFE would not likely let me try. But to her credit, I have horrible fashion sense and rely on her heavily.

I'd wear it after having the sipper replaced with either a black zipper, or hook and eye fasteners. And you know if you had a handful of people wear it long enough it could easily become a tradition in some parts ;)

Without the zip and with a single hook and eye at the top, I think this would go well with the Confederate Memorial tartan (mentioned in another XMarks link)
And maybe, if the body of the jacket is too big, a coloured round neck waistcoat defining the Confederate Arm (i.e. Infantry, Artillery etc.)

CmCG, I agree with your instincts. And I agree with everybody else about the zipper. I believe they make that jacket in a wide variety of cool color combinations, some of which are pretty tempting.

But I think the velvet one might be a keeper. You may have to hem it, or you may have to deal with a collar that doesn't allow much room for neckwear, but if you can get it for less than $150 US, you ought to sell some blood and jump on it.



By the way, if you are small enough, you may want to check out the Korean made ( and marketed) velvet blazers on eBay that are cut like an Argyll. Their XL is about the size of a North American medium. Here is a good example, but in a tiny size:

NB, they come in a nice red, too. I have seen this jacket in person and I think it could work with a kilt if it would fit, but of course it would be nice to trick it out with square buttons, etc... The length is much closer to a kilt jacket than to a standard US- European blazer.
