Here's a cool item I purchased for my US Army kilt. It's a repro of a Civil War era army officer's hat badge. It's black and red wool with gold and silver thread embroidery, and about 3" wide. You can custom order a regimental number (I was an officer in the 2nd BN, 35th Field Arty).

You can buy such a badge here:

I agree wholeheartedly...now if only I were Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, or Engineer I'd be on that like stink on @#$% (Those are the four basic branches from Civil War times that immediatly come to my mind...there may be more...but I know mine is not among them!).
Very nice suggestion though, Brian! Thanks for sharing.

There's also: Signal, Ordnance, Medical, Chaplain, and Staff badges available. Oh yeah, and Sharpshooter...!

I had ancestors on both sides, I say it with a good deal of tongue in cheek
OVM and 28th ARK INF. Besides, I'm in the winning Army now right?
I have a soft spot for underdog; Confederates, Irish, and the crew of Firefly.

Some of the "underdog" are now part of the US Army; the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, now the 141st Field Artillery Regiment, Louisiana National Guard comes to mind.
