I think dark red would look excelent with this tartan, but as David said, there are several less obvious options that would work really well too!
Awesome start, and welcome to the world of kilting!

I'm betting that the length on this kilt is just fine- it looks as if the kilt is being worn quite low on the waist (around where the p@nts waist is, rather than the true waist). Mr. Montgomery, have you considered wearing it a bit higher on the waist?

I agree with Ryan, it looks like your kilt is at your p@nts level.
We start out wearing kilts where we are used to wearing our p@nts. Once I raised my kilt up to my true waist and got used to it there, it feels right and natural. Looks better as well.
and enjoy the kilt.

It's mostly camera angle, but I did hoist it a little higher before I went out. The top of the kilt was about an inch above my navel.
I really needed a 23" but they only came in a 24". I struggled with the thing all night trying to keep it high enough.
Also, my last name isn't Montgomery; I have Montgomerys and Gibsons on my Mother's side of the family.

I agree that claret (dark red) would likely be smashing, especially for more upscale outings. I would (personally) steer clear of tartan red (bright red), but our skin tones are diferent.
Lovat green would work in a variety of situations I think, but it also partly depends on your wardrobe. As an American you will be off to a good start if you let go of the "matchy-match" disease and start out by upping your game to 'contrast and coordinate'.
I would seriously consider Ancient or Saint Andrew's blue, and possibly bottle green as well. Of these four, dark red, lovat green, light blue and dark green, not every color will work with every sweater or tie in your closet, but likely one of them will.
I will admit Lovat Green is the most versatile not white color I know of. Dress tartans with lots of white in them and MacLeod of Lewis with all the yellow excepted, I think Lovat Green hose can go with lots and lots of looks above very casual but below black tie. Bright enough to contribute, but not so bright as to be flambouyant. Just M2c.
