And then it all goes back in the closet to wait.
I hope that everyone else enjoys their Tartan Day celebrations.
That may have something to do with the jacket in your avatar...

Strangely I have no problems with the jacket, provided it's worn in the 'correct' circumstance. I wore it to see Flogging Molly in Detroit with a jaunty hat and my good Docs and all was fine.

Tartan Day is a US holiday, celebrating Scottish contributions to the nation (and the world!). It's on the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Arbroath, which is something I think Jock Scot said even the Scots pretty much ignore
Back to the OP... I'm just gathering as many of my mates together for a dram at the local. Only myself and one other lad will be in kilts (maybe a third, if he borrows one of mine), but most of the lassies will be in plaid skirts. Can't say I'll be complaining
I agree with other posters about level of formality. I'll be out in jacket and tie.

My first kilt is in the mail as we speak and should arrive before the sixth. I figure I will wear it out for the first time, take my mom out to lunch. Since it will be my first time I figure a sweet little old lady as company should ensure it goes smoothly and the day gives me a great excuse to be wearing a kilt in case anyone asks.

I've just finish steaming my kilt and I'm laying out the rest of my clothes so that I can go to Balboa Park here in San Diego and celebrate Tartan Day with some of the locals. I'm really looking forward to it and I'm taking my camera so that I can post some pictures for all of you afterwards.

Ah yes, that's right. I believe New Zealand joins Oz in celebrating Tartan Day on July 1st?

It's also a Canadian holiday on the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath

That's right CMcG, Tartan Day downunder is held on July 1, the anniversary of the repeal of the 1747 Act of Proscription. Us ex convicts are a little strange and do things our own way

I spent my Tartan Day starting out kilted in Ancient Douglas and my day tweed Lovat Green jacket and waistcoat for an 0700 meeting, where a few heads turned as I entered fashionably (3 minutes) late unintentionally, then started what was supposed to be an office day with no patients. About two hours after my meeting I got pulled to do an interventional case (think xray guided minor surgery) and had to unkilt down into some scrubs, and never got back into the kilt. Spent the rest of the day in the scrubs, including the evening after going home, until bedtime, when I switched into my own version of home scrubs I use as pajamas (I love medicine--one of the few jobs where you can actually work in your pajamas in public). I had to carry my kilt, jacket, waistcoat, tam, shirt & tie, sporran, belt, and dress brogues out to the car from work and then into the house and subsequently back into the kilt closet. Only thing tartan/highland I got to wear all day was my argyll top kilt hose and flashes, and even they were hidden by the legs of my scrubs. And forgot to hit the scotch closet for a wee dram before bedtime, too. Bad juju day I guess. Better luck next year.
Oh well, I get two days dress kilted for the Kentucky Oaks and kentucky Derby in just a couple weeks.
