Well, what a weekend that was... arrived at Ferintosh in Dumfries on the Thursday night and kicked off the proceedings with a superb, Whisky Tasting Masterclass. Unfortunately I was so engrossed with the subtle nuances of smokey compared to sherried and chill filtered against not chill filtered, I forgot to take any pictures. Not good when later you are compiling a photo thread. Robertson is a Whisky Master and certainly knows his stuff. A fascinating evening with great company and good food.

Friday we were up early for breakfast then drove to Wigtown to visit the Bladnoch Distillery. After the previous night's enthusiastic gathering, a dose of "Black Asprin" was needed.

Bladnoch Yard.

No 1 warehouse. (Shhhhhh... there's whisky sleeping here).

The pagoda roof over the Malting house. Traditional malt kilns would draw the hot air from the peat furnace through the malt by way of a chimney effect generated by the characteristic steep roofs and pagoda head. This type of roof is common to many distilleries.

Washbacks...

Me an' my mate Dave.

The Mash tun where the Malt grist is mixed with hot water to make a rough beer.

Inside the Mash tun

One of the two copper stills.

aquiring the knowledge.

Different barrels and an insight into the cooper's art.

As we wandered through the place we found a cubby hole full of interesting things.

My wife wends her way to the bonded warehouse. She's interested but without the same obsession that I have.

Short pause on a beautiful day.

WARNING!

2001. Not long to go for these.

The smell in here is amazing by the way.

American Oak Barrels are the most usual type used to age the whisky. These originated at Jim Beam, the Bourbon people.

Produced in 2007, this batch only has another 8 years to sleep before being fully fledged 12 year old. Lot of bottles-worth here.

Oak aged Gin? Must admit, I've never heard of that before.

I'll just take a wee nip with me for the road...

After the tour we tried a small sample in the garden outside...

Down by the river

Dave, me and Robertson.

On the way back towards Dumfries we stopped off at the Marrbury Smokehouse by Carsluith Castle and bought some smoked salmon, mackrel and mussles, hunger had set in. Robertson and Emma with Wigtown Bay in the background.

We then pulled off the main A75 and headed up towards Cairn Holy, Two remarkably complete Neolithic burial cairns, of a type characteristic of Galloway.

We were peckish by now so we threw out a blanket and tucked into the Scottish smoked fish and a fine selection of Lancashire cheeses that I'd brought up from home. A good reflection of the assembled company.

We didn't think the 6000 year old inhabitants would be too bothered by our picnic. Say Cheeeeeeeeeeese.

Çağman, enjoying the view.

The Twa dugs.
It was a tremendous day. Lots of quick-fire humour and a Great laugh.
