Both tweed jackets would go with your tartan, try to get out of the matchy matchy syndrome, I have 2 brown patterned day jackets, neither of the have any colours that are present in my kits, MacLaren and Paterson tartans (mainly blue/green with red, white, yellow stripes) I have worn the jackets for years with no comments that they are wrong for the tartans.

Try to have a look at photos on the forum of games being held in the Highlands and you will see all manner of of jacket colours being worn with different coloured tartans. All the best in getting together your kilting wardrobe

Thanks Downunder for your thoughts. I'm really trying hard to get past the matchy match thing. In this case I'm more interested in light versus dark. And even more interested which of the two appeal most to the X Markers. Me? I'm inclined to go more with the dark... Tan seems a bit "beige". Yes?

Basically it boils down to which you feel more comfortable wearing. If I had to pick one I would go for the dark one as I think it might be a tad more versitile for summer and winter. If the photos are a good colour representation I do like the lighter one too and would not hesitate to wear it

I think the best tweed jackets for conversion

    1) have patch pockets which can be cleanly removed OR have the set-in pocket flaps higher and more to the sides. It's interesting, when I looked at dozens of old tweed (non-kilt) jackets on Ebay, I came to realise that the placement of the lower pockets varied quite a bit. Some have the pockets quite high and to the sides, excellent for kilt jacket conversion. When the pockets are placed low and more to the front the kilt jacket conversion ends up with the pockets too close to the new edge of the jacket.

Some patch pockets can't be cleanly removed: I bought one tweed jacket at a thrift store and removed the patch pockets only to discover that the strong tight stitches at the top corners had damaged the underlying fabric.

    2) button high. Some one-button and two-button (non-kilt) jackets have a very low deep V in front, in other words they button far too low. Three-button and four-button jackets have lapels more like those found on kilt jackets.

    3) have lapels which are rather narrow. The super wide 1970s lapels won't look right as a kilt jacket.

I second the idea of getting a suit so as to have plently of extra fabric.

You guys are awesome. Thank you. Great advice. I think I'm hanging more toward the darker jacket. Hmmm...???
