Using cheap interfacing...<grrrr>
Hi everyone,
I've just had to pull my purchased kilt apart to replace the horribly cheap interfacing that was utilized by the kilt maker!
I'm also going to be replacing the cheap lining material.
It's so frustrating that I have to do this because the kilt maker decided to use what could almost be called osnaburg for interfacing.
I just wore my kilt for a Tartan Day event. I was getting ready to put it away when I noticed the wool stretching and deforming due to the cheap interfacing!
Luckily I'm a kilt maker and have a nice steamer, so after removing the straps, buckles, interfacing and lining, I was able to steam the plaid back into shape. Now I'll spend the rest of the afternoon replacing the interfacing and the lining.
Please, if you're going to spend the time and effort to make a kilt, make sure you use good interfacing that won't stretch or deform. That will guarantee that your kilt will wear well for many years to come.
Cheers!

Hair canvas is the byword around here. Several threads (so to speak) on which brands and types are preferred, where to buy them, etc. Don't know where you are in SoCal but there is one local shop here in San Diego that carries an acceptable hair canvas, if you need it in a hurry.

Got nothing constructive to say other than, WTH?
Good thing you noticed before it was too late. And, I guess that kiltmaker will be losing some future business.

While you have your kilt open please remember to replace the stabilizer too.
This one little detail is skipped by more kilt makers that I can count and yet is more important than the hair canvas interfacing.

I'm wondering if that might be part of the problem in the first place: no stabilizer.
I remember the difference in the fit and shape of my kilt when I put a stabilizer in, that was even before I decided to chop out the fell pleats and put hair canvas etc. It must totally distort the tartan if the extras are removed and there's no stabilizer...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I recently had to replace the buckles on a kilt by another maker for a client of mine, and I confess to being a little curious about the construction of it, after all there are lots of perfectly good ways of sewing a kilt and they are not all the same.
When I looked at the interlining I was a little surprised. For a kilt that was custom made one and not inexpensive it seems rather poorly built on the inside.
I often think that I might put into too many padding stitches on the hair canvas, but at least I am sure that the inside of the kilt is secure and firm.

A travesty...
Paul...that is a travesty of justice right there! I'd be livid to find that on the inside of a kilt that I paid $200 for, much less $500+. So here's the question...did you tell the owner?
