    Why Cedar

If it's not made of cedar, is there cedar lining?

Why Cedar? Does it have some sort of property beneficial to kilts?

    Just wondered.

I just googled wood suppliers in the UK and Western Red Cedar seems to be most popular but is generally advertised for outdoor use, shingles, cladding, decking etc.

There are a number of substances, natural and man-made, that are repellant to moths, who would lay their eggs in the wool and you would find holes in your kilts and jackets, etc... when their larvae hatched and started munching their way through your woollies. So generally wool items are stored in cedar chests or closets, or with cedar sachets or blocks/balls, lavendar, or traditional mothballs (naptha based). Cedar oil, lavendar, and Naphtha are moth repellant and keep them from setting up shop in your expensive woolen kilt and other woollen gear.

Thanks for the info. Yes of course, Moths. We use mothballs and lavender.
