266 Years Ago... Yesterday
I'm a day late with this one, but on April 16, 1745 the Battle of Culloden Moor was fought.
Wherever your sympathies in the matter lie, it is a day to remember!

The battle was fought in 1746 so, 265 years yesterday.

I didn't realize! I may have to wear my blue bonnet today.

Och yes. I pointed that out to a number of Scots at our Grand Master's receiption - none of whom had thought to wear their tartan! I don't think they'll make that error again; although I was most gentle, they were each embarrassed.

It's a day I always remember and acknowledge.
Something musically commemorative though a bit strange, from a Scot who began as a folk singer and then went Country & Western, Isla Grant:

As for the visuals, please disregard the anachronistic beards. :-)

As best we can determine (it's difficult to be sure), ancestral MacBean was born in the same parish as Culloden in 1727, which would have made him 18 or 19 on the day of the battle. He appears in the Irish Church affiliation census of 1766 near Cookstown, at the southern edge of Co. Derry, and in Charleston, SC at the end of the next year. He served with his son in the SC militia during the War of Independence, possibly at nearby Musgrove Mills and Kings Mtn.
Along with the rest of "Lady Anne MacKintosh's Regiment", more than a dozen MacBeans were captured and deported; presumably many more died or disappeared. There are few MacBean or McBain left in Inverness.

While I do agree, as has been pointed out elsewhere getting properly fitted out from scratch for a period not your own represents a pretty large cash outlay -- especially, I'd say, if you're going to try to portray one of the front-wankers rather than a poor tenant clansman.

Tell me about it man. In my 16 years of reenacting with no less than a dozen different historical impressions complete with multiple outfits for each spanning from 1640-1945 it nauseates me sometimes to think of the thousands I have spent. Sickening too to think of the mistakes I have made along the way getting crap that was wrong and needed replacing right away. Its an addiction!!
But removal of ones beard does not cost you anything. Though it caused my wife a great deal of distress and I still hate being clean shaven, but the fact of the matter is facial hair just would not be correct for my various 18th century impressions nor would it be acceptable for one of my WW2 impressions. Though its acceptable for my American Civil War and WW2 Italian impressions. Dedication!

Always thought that one was an entertaining vid on Culloden.
