Stone Mountain Highland Games
October 14 - 16, 2011
Anyone planning on attending?
The guest Chief will be Donald Maclaren of Maclaren, who is also a member of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. So a pretty cool deal.
My own Chief I think is a little too elderly to be traveling so it looks as if I will not get to meet him. (THE RT. HON. THE EARL OF CRAWFORD). I have been fortunate to meet 2 Chiefs at the SMHG when I was younger but don't remember who they were.
Is SMHG the biggest Highland Games in the States?

It vies with Grandfather Mt for biggest in the Southeast, I think. Not sure about the whole country. I'll be there, just like the last 6 or 7 years.

Where 4 Scotsmen gather there'll usually be a fifth.

I will try as this is my Clan Forrester home town games, albeit 500 miles away from me. We had a nice meet-up last year.

If the Good Lord's willin' and the creek don't rise, I'll be there. It's always quite a gathering, and we have quite a nice turnout.
I'll host a little pre-games gathering at the Celtic Tavern in Conyers again this year on Friday evening. We will probably take over one side of the tavern for our own ill-begotten purposes. Hope you can make it.

Texas Mommy,
My better half and I have been there for the last eight years and have our campgroung reservation for 2011. Great games altough the weather can be a bit unsettled at time. Looking forword to seeing the X Markers this year. I seem to miss them every time.

I doubt it.
The way "they" seem to tally events is by persons through the gate. Since Grandfather Mountain spans 4 days, it has a decided advantage. Last year Grandfather had 156 clan tents plus 17 other tents on the field (although about 50 clans have two tents).
Grandfather Mountain has one of the largest solo piping contests in the USA; Stone Mountain has the largest band contest in the Southeast. Grandfather might have the best athletic competition, which includes not only heavy Highland events, but is also a sanctioned track and field event. Plus the marathon.
If you've been to the Texas Scottish Festival, I think Stone is similar in size -- maybe a bit bigger (buy only two days instead of three, so who knows).
It's my understanding that Pasadena is quite large too but I haven't been.
