My guess is that it developed in the Viking population from the recoil shock of centuries of chopping off peoples heads with those Dane axes. ;-)
Sort of echoing chrisupyonder, it's something that progresses VERY slowly. I first became aware of it in my hand when I was around 20, though I had no idea what it was. Today, I still have full mobility/flexibility in the hand and fingers, you woouldn't know it was there unless you were looking for it. And I turned 61 just yesterday.
While it's not curable, it's surgically treatable/correctable. It'll come back, but you're not likely to live long enough for it to become a problem again.

From the most reliable wikipedia
The word "jeans" comes from the French phrase bleu de Gźnes, literally the blue of Genoa. Jeans fabric, or denim, originated independently in two places:
The French town of Nīmes, from which 'denim' (de Nīmes) gets its name.
From Dongari Killa in India, from which the word 'dungarees' came.[1] See Etymology of "dungaree"
So it appears blue jeans did not originate in the Americas.

The now-iconic "blue jean" working-man's trousers was a 19th C. American innovation, regardless of where the fabric type was conceived.
The word "tartan" is also French in derivation, and the fabric did not originate in Scotland. The kilt, however, is still uniquely Scottish in its origins.
At any rate, I was merely illustrating absurdity by being absurd! Of course anyone is "allowed" to wear these garments...!

The story I heard was that Levi Strauss ended up with a surplus of the darned stuff and made pants with rivets for miners, not to mention his name and his fortune. And that happened in the U.S.A.

Of course, Hamish was played by Irish actor Brendan Gleeson... On a related note, the token Irish character Stephen was played by Glaswegian actor David O'Hara! (Obviously of part Irish descent.)
