I second this. For sports and lounging they work well. But for anything more I personally find it hard to wear them. The comment the OP made was key "I have never owned nor worn a hand made or real wool kilt so I have no basis for comparison."
My first kilt was a SK. I was embarrassed to wear it and it certainly made me more uncomfortable to wear than pants. I also didnt like sport kilt because the pleats were always off.
That said I wore it for piping in public. So I was wearing it outside it's intended use. Sports. I did start to like it after I wore it around the house.
