Red face Traveling to Scotland ??

Moderators if this is in the incorrect forum, please move to correct forum.

It seems at this point that I will be traveling to Scotland in the near future. My friend will be doing some student teaching in Wales, in October (I think about 5 weeks). So its been discussed that I could meet up and visit Scotland.

The question is whether it would be better to visit towards the end of September or the end of October 2011? As this seems to be the most possible.
I understand that it is towards the end of the tourist season. (Hey I am cheap!..frugal).

Any suggestions or comments are truly appreciated.

Late Sep/early Oct is generally a good weather window in Scotland whereas we often have storms towards the end of the month which suits me as it's the end of the salmon season on our river and I always take the last two weeks of Oct to fish. No water no fish.

If you have a choice then I'd go for late Sep.

Late September is a fine time. If you can find room, bring a pair of binoculars, if you are not spending too much time in the cities.

Don't worry about prices, Mex, you will find whatever you need to fit your budget. Weather, on the other hand, is not something you can control, so if you actually do have a choice, choose the last half of September. True, the tourist mobs are not still about, but the places you may want to visit have not yet closed, too.

One very important thing: visit Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee if you have bundles of time, but concentrate on the wonders of the Highlands and the Borders and perhaps just fit the cities in as places to gawk at in passing through.

Depends what you want to do.
If you want to catch a highland games it would need to be September.
Pitlochry Games 11th September, Peebles Games in the Scottish Borders 12th September, and Invercharron Games, north of Inverness on 18th September and then that's the season over.
Be sure to visit the rolling hills of the Scottish Southern Uplands and the beautiful Solway coastline, south of the Glasgow/Edinburgh central belt,
