Don't blame yourself. It's hard to break patterns of thinking. In the US, we're taught to match. The same isn't true with the kilt and Highland wear.

If you browse around for pix in the traditional dress thread, you'll find some wonderful examples of how native Scots (and those who take their cue from them) seem to disregard all we've been taught about matching and make it work.

There was a fantastic series of threads with some very interesting commentary a while back.

Casual hose? Any colour but white (or cream). Garters? any colour but the colour of your hose.

Dressy or formal? I'd go with the red & black diced hose as your classic "best choice".

There's no law saying that you have to wear hose at all. Sandals, Crocs, tennis shoes and hiking boots are all perfectly good choices for footwear, and I'd encourage you to wear whatever kind of socks/hose you would wear with whatever shoes you wear.

What size shoe are you? I have a pair of Diced hose I did for my German Heritage kilt that I am willing to part with for 1/2 price (and they were only worn 3 times).

Outside of those, I'd go with Charcoal.

Hi, Carl – nice tartan, nice hose.
As Jeff said, all sorts of combinations are possible. Personally (and being of German descent) I would quite fancy red hose with yellow flashes.
Yellow hose I don’t think I would try, but you could wear either black or red flashes with those. And black with yellow flashes would be pretty eye-catching.
    Go for it!
    Regards,
    Mike

I am by no means a master of sartorial elegance or an expert on the proper form but I do wear the Kilt a lot as normal clothing and mainly in a casual stylee.

Some sock ideas here based around a predominantly red kilt (Bruce Modern). Not the same tartan obviously but similar enough in that it's RED, mainly...

    See what you think.

Black Shirt, Red Kilt, Standard Bottle Green Hose, Red Flashes.

Bottle Green and ancient Red Flashes.

Black Jacket, forest green shooting socks with argyll tops, no flashes or ties. It was f-f-f-freezing too, hence the Bruce scarf.

    No Flashes again. Smart casual.

Same socks but with green/red garter ties.

Better picture of garter ties... Oik casual.

Bit of an early stab at dressy. Black hose and tartan flashes. Not my favorite get-up now but you learn as you experiment.

I prefer this look for dressy now.

I think yellow or red hose with German Heritage would be a bit vivid but yellow or red flashes or wool ties with darker socks would work well.

Or you could always go blue... Chillin' at home,

    ...in crocodile shoes.

Charcoal or grey go fine with the red kilt, or match or complement the sweater colour.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

That is a nice looking tartan, with lots of colors that will work well with it. I'd avoid red hose, only because there is so much red already in the tartan.

Charcoal grey will of course look nice. I'd also go for yellow hose. Red flashes with either.

    English Bloke.

Super pictures. Thanks for showing them.

Now I need more flashes and hose...

    Chris.
