    When is it not appropriate?

    Hello from Bozeman, MT.

My sweetheart and I will be going to Scotland in three weeks. My question to all you experts is when will it NOT be appropriate for me to be kilted?

Here's a pic of the sporran and chain I made for the trip. What do you think?

Probably not wise to wear a kilt when absailing down the side of Ben Nevis, but OK at most other times I think.

    First off,

I don't think Scotland is any different from the rest of the world in terms of where/when it wouldn't be appropriate to wear a kilt. But back in 2008, one of our members, Alan started a thread to address this issue...

Welcome from Inverness-shire. I can't see your picture, but I assume your kilt is a tartan one. We on the whole do not understand non tartan ones, but don't worry if it is just wear it , but just bare in mind what I have said. If its a tartan one then wear it exactly to the "instruction book" and you will be fine.

Just be well aware that you will be probably the only person within 100 square miles of you that is wearing the kilt and the locals will instantly assume(correctly!) that you are a tourist. But don't let that worry you as many of us ----certainly in the Highlands----quietly enjoy seeing a well worn(as opposed to worn out)kilt. If you are expecting a reaction to your kilt from a Scot---- good or bad----- you will probably be disappointed, but for sure many a visitor's camera will be pointed in your direction!

If you are visiting the Western side of Scotland, and the more north you are the worse they get, you are entering the home of the dreaded midge which will be out and about in 3 weeks time, so the kilt is not the best idea if they are about!

I hope you have a great trip and pictures are always appreciated by all of us on this website.

That's an interesting sporran Baldybrown. Welcome to the forum by the way.

    Thanks Guys,
I've heard it said that a kilt is something Americans wear in Scotland, and Scots wear in America. I will be attending some parades and Highland Games, and I'm planning on wearing it there for certain. I'm also rather proud of the sporran I made, hope it'll work out.

May I suggest that this will be fine for evening wear, but a black or brown leather sporran would be more appropriate for daytime wear.

I'm inclined to agree with you Chris. That's a fine sporran but definately on the side of formal. The Kilt is uncommon as general wear in Scotland and you'll be standing out in the crowd by wearing one. No need to over-egg the pudding by wearing a formal sporran during the day as well. Have you looked at the cargo sporrans from Stillwater Kilts? (Nylon or leather) Plenty of room in those to hold the nick-nacks of the travelling man.

I'm a little surprised (and gratified) that you guys find the sporran on the formal side. I was shooting for a kind-of 'Mountain Man' look. (since I'm from the Rockies) The white tassel in the center is fashioned from the fox's scrotum. Do you think it would look more casual if I wore it with a brown leather strap instead of the fancy chain?
Scotland is only 1/5 the size of Montana, but Scotland has over 3,000 castles and Montana has none.
