Glen Doll and Jock's Road

The class B road into Glen Clova continues as a minor road for a further three miles beyond the Glen Clova hotel, into Glen Doll at the southern end of the Grampian Mountain Range. Here is the tourist office at the car park at the end of the road, note there are still some patches of snow on the 3,000 feet high mountain tops even after a month of pleasant sunny weather.

Jock's Road starts here and runs for 15 miles over the hills to Braemar. Jock's Road is an old sheep drovers' route which can still be followed as a footpath. Initially the path is in trees, but as we climb higher, clear felling allows us to see the rocky hills. Further along, fires were being purposely set to burn off the old tree stumps and roots.

Above the tree line, Jock's Road continues into the hills.

For a less strenuous walk we crossed a footbridge to access an alternative forest trail to return to the car par. This walk amounted to a five mile loop. From the footbridge we can see Jock's Road continuing along a shoulder on the right hand hillside as it makes its way towards the pass at the head of Glen Doll, and over towards Braemar.
