Grouse foot pin
http://www.antiques.com/classified/1...pin-FREE-SHIPP

I'm not interested as I don't relish wearing bird feet, but it looks authentic to me as an innocent. Says it's silver too. Let me know if you buy it!

I would say it is authentically ugly. IMHO

As it happens, I have two of these (eBay purchases). One is old and the other is positively ancient. They are certainly not as rare as the advert makes out. The thing is, I was told that they were usually worn by women.

I have one as well. They are not very rare, although I think some look better than others. Many were silver plated and not solid sterling silver, and can be found for a lot less $$$. It's hard to tell on this one from just a picture.
I've heard the "worn by women" thing too. I've also heard that women wear it facing up and men wear it facing down or something silly like that. I wear mine on occasion anyway, because I don't believe these stories entirely.

I too have a couple and sometimes wear one on my lapel on my tweed argyle jacket.

Grouse kilt pins were extremely popular during the nineteenth-century, particularly during the Victorian era, and well into the twentieth-century. I agree, they are not as rare as that specific advertisment mentioned. I currently own one Grouse kilt pin, yet I seldom wear it. Like Scottish white heather and wedding horseshoes, they are considered a good luck charm. Many of them are indeed a wee bit ugly, but you have to remember, it is indeed a Grouse talon!
Cheers,
