Homemade whole wheat bread with a portobello cap that's been grilled with cumin and rosemary. Atop that, spoon a little hot salsa and some vegan cheese, then a thick slice of fiery onion and a few sheets of crisp lettuce. Press it all down and eat it with your teeth.

A BELTCH using fried bread. Bacon, Egg, Lettuce, Tomato, Cheese, Ham. Depending on how long you have before your next blood test, the bread can be fried in the bacon fat, or in butter. If using a sharp cheese I find a good sourdough works well. Of course, it is also possible to do this with toast (but really, why would you?).

Alright, well... I did promise that if someone started up a sammich thread in the pub (to stop my other thread in the humour forum from being hijacked) that I would post up a recipe.
Here's the link. How to make a screaming eagle!

Articifer, getting decent bread for a cuban is very hard to do here also. We usually had to roll the dice and hope that whichever french or italian loaf we picked up would have the right bite to it. Occasionally we got very lucky, but you are right, the bread is the key to this baby!
CDNSushi, that sounds so incredibly yummy!

The muffuletta is my favorite by far, but I have to admit that a good pressed cuban sandwich also hits the spot!

Daily it is honey ham, american cheese and lettuce with musturd on whole wheat. Boring I know, but quick and satisfying. Frequently for breakfast drop the lettuce musturd and put it on a bagel with butter.
If time isn't an issue, and the wife has bought out the deli, then a deli roll with brown musturd, ham, turkey, pastrami, lettuce and dill pickles is great delight.

Just one...NO!
1. Good rye, ever so thinly sliced ham, aged swiss, mayonnaise (JFG), mustard (either Mr. Mustard or a Dusseldorfer), crisp lettuce and thin fresh tomato.
2. Tomatoes vine ripened and just picked, toasted white bread with cheddar melted on one piece, mayonnaise, salt and pepper, a summer treat.
3. Lobster Roll (the ones at Legal Seafood, the Summer Shack and Belle Isle in Boston, or pretty much any grungy shore shack in New England), accompanied with a cold Harpoon IPA.

Well played, sir. A good "Princess Bride" reference is ALWAYS appropriate.

I'm pretty simple, I love a classic reuben sandwich made with luscious corned beef, tangy sauerkraut, creamy Russian dressing and melted swiss cheese grilled until the cheese has melted and the rye bread is crispy and golden brown.

From my youth - it's hard to beat a good chip butty, or a fried egg sandwich (+/- bacon).
A good Philly cheesesteak, on an Amoroso roll with provolone is delicious.
I'm also more than partial to a well made bacon, egg and cheese on an Amoroso roll of a morning. Must cut that out.
Beyond a shadow of a doubt though, my favorite sandwiches these days are the hoagies from Chickie's Deli in South Philly.
Their Fried Tomato Special, or their Hot Roast Pork with Broccoli Rabe and the most exquisite house-aged provolone may be the best things to put in a sliced roll, since sliced bread.
