One of our dancers is of Chinese heritage and wore his silk chinese jacket to our recent ball. It is about the length of a tux jacket. I respect him for honoring his heritage, and the jacket was beautiful, but in truth, the length made the whole thing look wrong. It covered his sporan and hung too low on the pleats to allow for easy movement. Go to your local tux rental outlet, or an internet site such as www.yourowntuxedo.com and buy a tail coat for about $35. Have a local seamstress convert it, and Bob's your uncle. You'll look just dandy for under $100.

That was my thought! It really just needs to be shortened.

In addition to that, you can add epaulettes, cuffs, and silver buttons.

You may have meant to refer to http://www.MYowntuxedo.com/ Hmmm, watch out, lads: the red coats are coming!
The used market for formal jackets can be rewarding. I have dealt with these guys on Ebay: Formalwear-Outlet-by-Monkeysuits

You could consider having a regular "smoking jacket" (i.e. a velvet jacket) shortened. They make good candidates as they are at the informal end of "Black tie" so some have patch pockets. The challenge is finding one... but nothing a few judicious moments on ebay shouldn't solve.

I had a tux jacket cut down to wear with a kilt, and I am very pleased with the result. The model I chose was not a traditional cut, but I thought it was perfect for my needs. It had small lapels; the back was vent-less, but the body was flared enough to make vents unnecessary; and it did not have side pockets! I also liked that it had a small amount detailing down the front. I am very happy with the results, and I've had a number of compliments.
I bought the coat from Yourowntuxedo.com. It is the black "capri" model, and there is a white "capri" model pictured on the same page that shows the detailing much better. http://www.myowntuxedo.com/c-1-forma...ufacturer=-19-
