Did Anyone Get This For A Steal?

This sporran sold on EbayUK this morning (Australian time) for GBP41.00. At first look it appears rather ratty but can you see the knobs at the side which indicates it's a functioning cantle.

    It was described as thus
A genuine antique Scottish sporran, probably Victorian. Silver? plated cantle with pictish style circular designs. Approximately 9 inches high, 6 inches wide.
It is in used vintage condition with signs of age/use, please see images.
A lovely piece of historical vintage Scottish dress, sold with NO RESRVE!

In my opinion whoever won it got a blinder of a bargain. With a little work, maybe replating and perhaps a new bag, I think it would make a wonderful sporran

I saw this too, but had to get on a plane and missed the excitement of the final bids. I hope whoever got it has fun fixing it up. Is that a very common style, to have a functioning cantle as well as a small pouch on the back?

I would hazard a guess that the cantle is completely foreign to this bag. The little pocket on the back is very similiar to those on old horsehair sporrans, which suggests to me that the bag section was originaly from an old hair sporran that has been covered with some animal skin. Then the cantle has been added from another bag and possibly just stuck on.
I base this on the metal components seen sticking out from the side of the bag which are usually part of the hinge of a functioning cantle. I have never seen them added as mere decoration
