I liked Carter Littlepage Stevenson, I could never get prominent sideburns so I think I'm just envious.

Custer had a pretty sweet stache. Plus he led the Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War which gives him instant hero status in my book.

W.B. Hazen: not only a thick, bushy 'stache with curly-cue tips, but a meticulously groomed goatee with just a hint of gray - best of both worlds.
By the way, "unidentified soldier" - think about it, if you had a creepy squashed face like that would you want to be identified? Seroiusly, that dude looks like he was caught in elevator doors. And... his eyes are WAY too close together to have an IQ above 74.

Doesn't it HAVE to be Burnside? They named the style after him!

George F. Crook -- one of my personal heroes for his campaigns against the Apache in Arizona in the late 19th century. Before serving in Arizona, he served in the Northern Plains, and his soldiers composed a little ditty about him:
I’d like to be a packer
And pack with George F. Crook
And dressed up in my canvas suit
To be for him mistook.
I’d braid my beard in two long tails,
And idle all the day
In whittling sticks and wondering
What the New York papers say.

Col. John Rice Wolfe (my great great grandfather) gets my vote. In fact, anyone who meets me will see his style of facial hair. I saw a picture of him and thought "Holy crap! That's cool!!" And then I went to go do it to myself. I'll scan that picture sooner or later...

Christopher C. Augur
Anybody who can get that much lift on sideburns without using hairspray has to get my vote.

I'll get the picture from my dad tomorrow and scan it so you can see the goatee that inspired me.
