Ah, a serious contender. A good attempt but as it's only 3 Jun I'll let it run a while and see if others agree.

Oh come, come. Has everyone given up?
The idea of these posts is to encourage people to look at things and try and work out what's there. So often a museum or private collection will label something as X when in fact a cursory look will raise an eyebrow and lead to the item being confirmed as Y.
So...............?

Well, I see the Greek letter Φ rotated 90 degrees. I haven't a clue what the tartan was used for, but the pieces look like leftover scraps to me.
Regarding the tartan itself, SlackerDrummer's interpretation of it looks generally right to me, except that the black stripes (not the tramlines) should be noticeably wider than the adjacent red stripes and the green pivot stripe. If it's a registered tartan, I haven't been able to identify it yet.
I suppose I'll hazard a few guesses:
Use: scraps left over from ?
Date: ca. 1746
Location: Inner Hebrides

Sorry to have taken a while to get this up.
MoH - you were on the right track, less the Western Isles bit.
Spent the morning writing it up - http://www.scottishtartans.co.uk/Pla...f_Eglinton.pdf
