Security check at Dublin Airport

When I fly kilted I always take off my belt and sporran for the security check.
Depending on its size, the kilt pin usually needs to come off also.

I do that as well - and I also get asked to remove my boots quite often. But that's fine, security checks at airports are a necessary evil, and there's no point getting in a stew about it. If you prepare properly, the delay is minimal, and if a security guard insists on patting me down, that's a fairly minor inconvenience as well. A security guard once told me a trick for not triggering the metal detector, though; if you twist the kilt so that the buckles are at the front and the back, the alarm won't go off

Well, thank you for that. I've pretty much stopped travelling these days; not taken a trip anywhere we couldn't drive in 6 years or so. But, if I do pluck up the courage to fly again, I'll try to remember your advice.

I intend wearing a kilt when I go to Gambia, W. Africa later this year. Fortunately I get VIP treatment when I arrive and so miss the ruck when trying to get through immigration and the recover of luggage. They scan cases when entering the country too. I don't fancy the Manchester end though. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to those they pick on to search. I had two pockets full (and I mean full) of costume jewellery and sailed through security. This must have looked suspicious as most of the earrings were wire!!!! The man next to me must have been in his late 60s and was body searched and is case opened and shoes x rayed. One can never tell.

Does anyone know the TSA's ruling on kilt pins and sgian dubhs? Although I wont be flying kilted anytime soon, I plan on doing so for my honeymoon in about a years time... what is the best kilt pin to get through airport security without setting off too many alarms?

The best pin is "none." Pack your pin in your checked baggage and put it on when you get there if you really need to wear one.

sgian dubh is a knife and wont pass .kilt pins should go scan through with sporran,belt, and other carry ons (best to avoid knifelike designs).

Also, if it's metal, it's probably best to check it if possible. Last time I went thru TSA, it seemed like they wanted me to even remove the safety caps on my epipen to let it pass. Needless to say, I wouldn't do that, as those are only to be removed when ready to administer the drug.

I guess that's my "point" about a kilt pin - it's a pin.
