Problem is, his hip measurement is around 10 inches larger than his waist measurement because he's got a large belly and his bum is wide, too. He's truly pear-shaped.
Perhaps I'm being unreasonable, but I would like his kilt to be his go-to comfortable thing to wear about town when we're out on errands or when he's mucking about in the yard, so I want something he'll -wear-. If he has to wear a belt, he won't ever consider it comfortable.
So the waist needs to fit comfortably, but I also want it to hang over his belly and hips nicely, without the pleat spreading unattractively. Maybe I'm asking for something that isn't really kilt then?
I get where you're going. And good on ya for wanting the man in a kilt! Most women roll their eyes at the hubby donning one it seems.
Anyway, there are alot of "men of substance" on this forum. Some with just that shape. While a kilt can look pretty awkward on that shape, if you get it measured and made right it could still look quite nice. A properly made to measure kilt takes the seat measurement into account. There are alot of good makers and retailers out there and on this board especially. I just got a new kilt from Reidkilts.com for instance and it is amazing. You could try an off the rack wool heavyweight from stillwaterkilts.com for a starter and see if it works out or looks too awkward on him. I have heard alot of good things about them.
On an aside, what part of Vermont are you from? I have family in Burlington.
