Not sure. I bottle a 14 year old Arran that is wonderful. Nonchillfltered and 43%. I'll send you a sample if you'd like to compare the two.

I bought my first bottle of scotch this evening. I have the house to myself... the wee one and his mother are hanging with the grandparents tonight so I though to myself, "I'm 29, I'm old enough to drink scotch."

This is what I picked up:


2007 Silver medal winner at some competition up in San Fransisco... said to be slightly smokey. Sounds good to me. I taste what they mean by smokey. It's like drinking a camp fire. Mind you, this is my first venture into the world of scotch. I've have whiskeys and bourbons before. I didn't much care for them. This however, as strong as it is, is far better tasting to me then anything I've had before. I will enjoy this bottle and I look forward to my next purchase.

Anyone else have this same bottle in there collection? I like it because it has personality? Are all scotchs this flavorful?

Been there, done that. Definitely a staple in any fine scotch whisky collection.

Interestingly, I cannot count the number of times I have had non-whisky drinking friends bring a bottle of Laphraoig as a gift with the comment that "the guy at the liquor store said this was the best scotch there is". It is indeed very good, but there are many others which may also meet your tastes.

Tried some Glenmorangie Astar at Albannach restaurant in London on Trafalgar Square-----marvelous, simply marvelous. Will likely pick up a bottle at duty free on the way home tomorrow to add to the collection. Was also convinced to buy the Glenmorangie Signet from the salesman at the Whisky Exchange showroom here in the Southwark portion of LOndon. Extravagant packaging and a reportedly exquisite flavour, which I will let you know about when I get it home and opened up for a tetch. If I can swing it I may also pick up some of the Glenmorangie 18yr Very Rare at Duty free if they have it, which the web site says they do. Prices are better at Duty free plus you often times get a full 1 liter bottle instead of the standard UK 700ml or standard US 750ml bottles. Only problem is getting them home safely. Need some al-quaeda proof packaging. Will post photos when home and settled back in.

Got the Glenmorangie Signet 750ml at the Whisky Exchange in London, then the 1L Astar and 700ml Extremely Rare 18 at Duty Free in Heathrow on the way home. All made it safely home and intact in their original packaging.

Tried the Astar last week--- very nice. Tried the 18 Extremely Rare tonite and it was sublime---very tasty, versy smooth, no backbite or bitterness. Best Scotch I have tasted to date. Will probably crack open the Signet later this week when I have another night not on call. More to follow.

Slowly building mine up. Currently all I have is a bottle of The Glenlivet 12 & a bottle of The Glenlivet 15.

I do however have a rather nice selection of Gin.

Jeff: Let us know about the Signet. Apparently, they use beer-making barleys including a chocolate malt! If nothing else, it should be unusual.

A friend bought me a bottle of the 18 ER for my birthday. He loves single malts, so we share our presents. Last Christmas we unknowingly bought each other bottles of Balvenie 15. We had to drink twice as much! For his birthday, Tuesday - Flag Day, I got him a bottle of GlenMo Finealta.

I agree with you about the 18 - wonderful! ... but the original 10 ain't too shabby. I've never tried the Astar before, so based on your reco, I'll have to give it a try. Thanks.

ozarkjabobite: If the Glenlivet 15 is the French Oak Reserve, then I just finished a dram of the same while showering after riding my mountain bike. Try not to picture that. ;) The empty glass is sitting in front of me as I write this. It is my favorite Glenlivet. Hope you enjoy it.

My favorite mixed drink is the Gin and Tonic, and my favorite gin is "The Hair of the Dog" - Gordon's. It's also one of the less expensive gins. One reason I like it so much is that it is the gin that Katherine Hepburn is dumping bottle by bottle into the Ulanga (sp?) River, while Bogart is passed out in front of the African Queen.

The Glenlivet is my most recent purchase and not yet opened. Enjoying the first dram of the newly opened Dalmore as I'm writing this. I just love that amber colour on it - doesn't taste to shabby either..!
