Just for in the house wear I would consider almost bunching a small amount of fabric when doing each pleat to actually cause a little flaring, but have fun with it, I just get the thinnest, densest fleece possible

Ok so those who voted to use a different fabric. What do you suggest?

Go for it. I love my comfy kilt around the house. I've even taken to sleeping in it -very, very comfy. I need to get a new one soon 'cause the waistband is wearing out from the velcro pulling on and off.

While I'll be interested to see the results of a fleece lounging kilt, if it were me, I'd go with a lightweight canvas, medium twill or even a heavyweight linen (but beware the wrinkle factor w/linen).

Personally, I think it's going to be extremely bulky and lumpy, but it's your kilt and your experiment, so go for it.

If I were to make a "lounge around" kilt and I really, seriously wanted it to be warm AND I was a patient lad, I would take a page from the old Pittsburgh kilts. I'd make an X kilt from the normal 8 ounce cotton/polyester twill and I'd line it with cotton flannel.

Just make sure...oh, dear lord make SURE that you've washed the cotton flannel, and machine-dried it about 4x before you sew it up.

This would be a bucketload of work, BTW. However, Pittsburgh Kilts made it "work' and I think it'd be worth a try.

Reminds me of a 1970's Sears catalog item: a terry cloth bath kilt with pockets accros the apron for toiletries. It drives me nuts not being able to find an old catalog and comfirm my memory. As Barb says watch for clinging fabric when you shop, otherwise go for it. You could even make a pocket to fit the TV remote. Have fun.

I agree with Alan. I vote for flannel.

Fleece would certainly be comfy, but could be a bit bulky. And unless you keep the thermostat way down, it could get awfully hot. I keep a few fleece blankets on the couch for the chilly nights, and sometimes they are just too much. Early this spring on a chilly morning I wrapped a flannel sheet around myself and after about 5 minutes decided that by fall I might need to make myself a great kilt out of one just for around the house. Sort of a kilted "snuggie". When it gets real cold, pull the rest of it up around the shoulders. I love flannel in winter.

I also have one of those terry cloth bath wraps. Elastic waistband, velcro closure and a large pocket on the front "apron". Had it for about 15 years and love it. I've gained and lost upwards of 40 pounds since I had it and it always fit like a glove because of the elastic. (something to keep in mind maybe). Around the house I wear either that or my acrylic kilt almost every night.
