Great. Read the forum. But if you or anybody else doesn't have something positive to write, then don't write anything.
As for mutual respect, I have given up on "mutual respect" on X Marks and will happily settle for good fences between neighbors.
YOU are never a jerk, Todd, as I've said many times. However, other people DO write unpleasant things. Right now I could give a rip about "traditional" and "modern". FORGET the labels, OK? For once, just forget them. This message is for new guys who don't know the lay of the land yet, and for guys who know perfectly damn well what they're doing and choose to do it anyway...
If you don't have something positive to write, then shut the hell up.
If you don't like what you read or see, then go spend your time somewhere else.

As this section of the forum is for those who wear the kilt as clothing in today's world... to give those looking for examples and inspiration...some ideas about how the kilt can be worn....
How about we try this -
Example:
You have a hand sewn, 8 yard wool, Tartan kilt. You want to go out to dinner with your partner. Post a photo, as an example for others, of how you would dress.
Guidlines:
The restaurant you have chosen is a new, small, ethnic place in your local area.
What you choose should be appropriate to what others at the place will be wearing.
Your choices should be appropriate for the weather.
The idea is that you are out for a pleasant dinner with your partner, not to stand out or show off. In essence, for this outing, the kilt is just another piece of clothing not the focal point.
In an effort to get this thread back on topic and away from quarrels I am asking that there be no editorial comments on any photos posted.

Paul,
Would you make the same pledge to avoid moderns insulting traditionalists? That's all I'm asking. I'm all for respect between the two camps, but this thread isn't really helping that cause.
T.

I'm not at sure what pledge you mean, I'm honestly not sure what moderns are insulting traditionalists,. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but it's can't be very common, or perahps I am missing it,after all i can't read all the posts.
You ask for respect between the camps, and there , I think is where part of the problem is, there are not two camps, just some people who are in one or the other, and LOTS of people somewhere between and inclusive of the two.
There are , I accept a few people , who enjoy starting or continuing a discussion, with more of a thought of being argumentive than supportive, and I'm sure they exist with opposite viewpoints, but with a membership of hundreds, indeed thousands, the numbers of disenters are fairly small.

When I was a boy a fair used to come to the county fairgrounds down by the river each August, and the barkers at the gambling tents habitually sang out, "Ya pays yer money an' ya takes yer choice!" My life has proved to be like that, to some extent, sometimes.
One of the attractions of xmarks is the wide variety of opinions articulately expressed by so many of the members. I keep reading posts by members such as Alan H and cajunscot because, while each of them often annoys me, each of them also often informs me of significant things I had otherwise overlooked. But that's not an obligation, it's just my choice.
Maybe I'm not a person at all, but just an undiscriminating, tasteless blob.

A sub section(or whatever) for a specific interest within the main theme is nothing new, and for those that are interested in that specific interest it does clear the decks elsewhere and allows those that want to discuss their particular slant on the theme without the clutter of other interests getting in the way.
Now I don't think anyone is saying that any sub section is exclusive and no one is making those that are not interested in a particular interest partake in compulsory reading. Are they? No they are not.
There are several sections here that I only visit on occasion, usually on a whim, and more often than not there is nothing there that takes my interest, sometimes though, there is something I can learn, or enjoy, or both. Amazingly I may even post a comment or two. Now as far as I am aware, apart from the odd question to clarify a point that I don't understand, I only make a comment if one is asked for and that is a privilege granted to ALL of us as members on this website. I quite accept that some of my comments may not be popular, but I would like to think that those comments were put in a courteous way and offers another point of view as do most who post on this website. It would be a pretty pointless website if we were all agreeing with each other, after all. Those that overstep the mark do fairly quickly get a "shot across the bows" from the moderating staff and well done them.
The problem for this "Modern Kilt sub section" is that there is no real definition,or, agreement of what a "modern" kilt is. Many have tried, using a date for example, but thus far none of us have really come up of a really satisfactory definition of what a contemporary/modern kilt is. It would be great if the collective wit of this forum could come up with an equitable solution so we can once and for all just enjoy what we do wherever we do it on this website without all this unfortunate bickering.
Now, I made a post in this thread that caused Steve some upset, I genuinely know not why and perhaps it does not matter too much anyway---and life moves on, other than it is much better all round if upset can be avoided. As you all know Modern/Contemporary kilts are not my field, so I will bow out here. But surely someone can pick up the "gauntlet" and come up with a solution here?
Each to their own.

This sort of thing reminds me so much of the motorcycling community, a group of people that all have one thing in common, but use that thing to segregate themselves so much! "If you're not riding (my brand or style of bike) you're just a poser" etc....
I used to get into a lot of that, but I came around to the place where I was happy to see people out riding.

I'm actually not upset.
I just can't understand why those who profess no interest in modern kilt wear persist in posting to threads in the modern kilt wear section.
Except that it seems that everytime someone opens a thread here the self-professed traditionalist begin to post to it.
I went back and counted.
There have been 52 posts to this thread.
Seven time it was asked that those who do not share an interest in modern kilt wear please refrain from posting.
Jock Scot posted 4 times.
Todd posted 6 times.
I suspect that this was in an attempt to foment an argument with the result that the thread is closed as has happend before. This tactic is an effective way of stiffleing discussion on a topic you do not like.
It seems that we have a cadre of those who wish this forum to be soley traditional and who have found a way to deny others the right to speak. By posting they know full well that there are some who will rise to the bait and the result is another closed thread.

Now hold on a minute Steve.
Actually speaking for myself my intention was solely to have a discussion and nothing more. I am sad that you consider that I was acting as an agent to derail a thread, nothing is, was and never has been further from my mind on ANY thread that I have contributed in. Of that I can assure you.
If you look at many of the threads that I post on, no doubt if you care to count, I probably post at least four times on many of them, am I trying to derail those threads too?I expect if you count my posts on the Welsh scarf thread there will be more than a few of my posts there, am I trying to derail that?
Yes I am not a fan of modern style kilts, but I think that I have made it crystal clear to those with the wit to see it, that I am more than happy for others to exercise freedom of choice. Frankly I find your suggestion ludicrous, and not a little insulting.
Mods and every one, I am exceedingly sorry if this derails this thread---I sincerely hope it does not, as it is a valid issue that Alan has brought forward that concerns many members here, but I do not take kindly to being accused of something that had not even entered my head.
If this thread is derailed by my post, I am sorry Steve, you are the one who has derailed it by making absurd suggestions about my motives.
