I don't have any authoritive knowledge Terry but my guess is that he has worn a watch chain for a number of years with his scottish dress, and now it's just part of his normal accoutrements that he feels naked without. Just a guess as I said

Gosh, what a dandy thread. I notice that HRH wears vests that aren't "pointed". I really enjoy that look.
