Some one just left a kilt on my door step What do I do with it

Yes its true. A friend who knows I wear Kilts Just gave me this kilt.

I have all kinds of questions and decisions to make on what I am going to do with this kilt.

It appears to be a Gordon Tartan. Anybody disagree?

The tag stamped on the inside says

    ANDERSONS
    Kilt maker to the Late
    King George the IV
    EDINBURGH
    SCOTLAND

    Size
    Height 24
    Waist 42
    Seat 50
    Made in Scotland

Is anyone familiar with this tag? Is my Translation correct? Is this the company that now is called Kinloch Anderson Any guesses on the age based on the tag and company?

The kilt is very Heavy in fact it weighs nearly 5 pounds. Measuring the hem I get 261 inches or 7.25 Yards. As noted above the tag shows it should be a 42 inch waist but It has been modified down to about a 32 inch waist I can see large pleats on each side where 10 to 12 inches have been folded in and there is still 22 inches of pleats in the back.

So here is my question. Can this kilt be restored back to a 42 inch waist?
I would love to hear any suggestions and comments anyone might have.

Yes, Andersons did become Kinloch Anderson of today. This is Gordon tartan, looks to be the heavy regimental cloth from the photos. Looks like it also has the high regimental rise.

    Good find!

Umm...WOW! What a wonderful surprise. I'd bet you could size it back up to 42 (assuming material wasn't cut out)...and I would absolutely do so. Congratulations!

It says they formed a limited company in 1868 and this is when it became Kinloch Anderson. They were making kilts for the military and by 1910 were a major supplier. So your kilt could be 1868 or older. You could ask the company.

Wow, Great find! As the label reads 'the late George VI', the kilt would have been made after 1952. My grandmother was a kiltmaker for Anderson before they became Kinloch Anderson.

It also looks as if it may have been hemmed? It may be possible to alter it back to 42". The aprons would probably have to be enlarged and the buckles moved. They look like they sit back quite far already. (Which is good.)

Hey, 7 replies and nobody has answered his question with "box it up and send it to me"?

Seriously, that is quite a gift and I hope you are able to have it re-engineered for your own enjoyment.
