So are the white hose that you and I dislike.
I think I need to reiterate...I'm patient, I can do it time and time again...
"White hose" is just a metaphor. One chosen because I know Jock doesn't consider them appropriate. I said that...clearly, unequivocally, in it's own paragraph...in a previous post.
Parenthetically, I suspect that some of those in the photos are cream or even yellow.
I don't get to choose...I only get to express my opinion without being called a "kilt cop."
Myself, I will always prefer diced or tartan hose. I think solid coloured hose looks too much like knee high socks and...what kind of shorts are those?!

I may be mistaken, but I don't think anyone is advocating for a change to the substance of the forum. My suggestion, at least, is to get rid of the date range as the defining characteristic of the sub-forum. I think it's inaccurate and misleading. Instead, simply label the sub-forum as pertaining to Traditional Highland Dress, that way it applies to Traditional Highland Civilian Dress as it's worn in the present day.
The touchstone is implied, but it's the fact that the sub-forum presupposes that Highland traditions govern the wear of the kilt.

This is why we should take the date range out of the description. It's misleading.

The problem there is that it leaves it open to interpretation. [In fact, if I'm not mistaken it takes us back to that sorry state of affairs that prevailed before the THD sub-forum was split off from a general Traditional Kilt discussion.]
And if interpretation starts creeping in...who, as Cowher asks, gets to decide what's appropriate and what's not?
That's what worries me. Because if the standards for what is Traditional Highland Dress is open to interpretation and departures...no matter how wisely handled...then there is no touchstone. Not really. Only advice, opinion and more interpretation.

I just want to say that, even if the title of this section remains the same, I have very much enjoyed the debate. It isn't very often that I am swayed back and forth by the arguments of both sides.
Thank you, everyone, for a very entertaining conversation!

May we close this discussion Now? This part of the forum is dedicated to Traditional Highland Dress. It is a great place to come to so that we do not stray too far from the Scottish dress. Over time the kilts and accomplishments have changed and we can appreciate that. History is made over time.
We all need the traditionalists and the historians but we also need to go our own way and try to stay wearing a kilt so it doesn't become a fashion fad. The younger generation do and will change the kilt to where they think it looks good. Personally I like the way a man looks in the more traditional kilt but I also appreciate how the younger people change and adapt to there time. The Scottish historical dress will always be the bases... some will accept that but some will change it in one way or another.
Let us all be easy with this and enjoy the future as well as appreciating our past.

This has been a good discussion, eh?
Here is another perspective on removing the date limits from the THD sub-forum. I think the dates are apt on the Modern and Historical areas, so the milestones of the Reign of Edward VII and the 1980's would still be there...

SO. who wants to talk about the college world series?
My only small point is that we have pretty much talked this topic to death. It has been well reasoned and passionate talk, but I think we have taken care of it. As much as we ever will.
And USC is in the College World Series. Again.
NB there is also a subforum for plain old Kilt Advice. My impression is that one may go there and espouse a categorized position or just offer advice. I will stick my head in there now and then, but THD is the place I always look first.
I am sometimes frustrated that we get one topic at a time, often with hours between posts. Thanks, everyone for this lively discussion.
And go Gamecocks.

Well done chaps, over a 100 posts and the subject has be aired fully and courteously, not one shot across the bows from a Mod. If I may say so, a prime example of how to behave on a forum whilst delivering a point of view.
