Difference between leather and traditional kilt

At the weekend I went to a friends farewell party, he and his wife are leaving Scotland to work abroad, I decided to be kilted and wore my black leather kilt.
At the party there were another 2 kilties but the attention I seemed to get because I was wearing a black leather kilt was quite interesting, normally as we know you are never alone when kilted, there is always people wanting to talk to you but with leather kilt, the interest seemed to rise up a level with some people really being curious that I was into leather in a heavy way. I told them that this was the only piece of clothing that I have ever owned that was made of leather, I am just not greatly into leather but I always fancied a leather kilt and bought one a few years back.
Any way the leather kilt was a converstaion piece and I suppose I enjoyed the attention but I am sure that some people would love to wear a kilt either traditional, modern or even leather but for some reason they don't seem to have the courage to do so and this is in Scotland

I think, Jimmy, the major sticking point with a leather kilt is that it is seen, rightly or wrongly, as a garment wore only by homosexuals. Especially so if it is black. There is the whole BDSM thing going on mentally in the background.

As nice as they are, many would shy away for that reason alone.

Leather appeals to people of both sexes and not just one sexuality though of course a leather kilt is more of a male garment.

If people like it they will get one, if they don't they won't.

I agree totally Trefor. There is though a general perception that if it isn't tartan, it isn't a real kilt. I believe more so in Scotland.

We all have certain perceptions and expectations. For a family get-together one doesn't expect ones grandmother to turn up in a mini-skirt and fishnet stockings.

I own three leather kilts, wear them often. I'm heterosexual. Never had a come on from a gay man while wearing my leather. Have in traditional kilts. I don't think sexual preference has anything to do with kilts, or which kilts - other than the famous rainbow kilt in Ham's collection....and even then could for sure be worn with pride by a PFLAG supporter. (PFLAG is parents and friends of lesbians and gays).

I have to disagree with Chas about leather garments being suggestive of homosexuality. Many men wear leather jackets, for instance, without being gay or anything else.

I also take issue that non-tartan kilts are not real kilts. My own perception is that it is the modern style of kilt with the narrow apron which is seen, certainly in Scotland, as not a kilt but a skirt. Kilts which are constructed in the traditional style are always considered kilts.

That is a stereotype, which SOME people might apply. I think it is overstating the case to say categorically leather kilts are judged that way. I also think much of the perception would depend on how it was worn. Jimmy, do you have a pic of yourself or could you at least give us a description?
