Yokoso from the Japanese Highlands! ;-)
I'm also afraid I can't be of much help to you with your questions, but I do hope you find some answers. Maybe if you decide to incorporate some katana-swinging samurai vampires in a future novel I'll have something more to contribute. Personally, I'm more of a zombie man myself, but hey, whatever floats your boat!
Welcome here, though.

Welcome...
I had 20 years Aberdeenshire... Lots of history in that area... Standing stones... Castles... Roman encampments...
Slains castle near cruden bay is rumoured to have been bram stokers inspiration for the transilvaynian part of dracula... Dunnottar held the scottish crown jewels for a while before they were sneakily stolen away to be hidden at a church just down the road in kinneff...
Aberdeen was created as a royal burgh in 1312 and had a university in 1495, im guessing that it would undoubtably have been a fairly decent sized port during your time period too. If you wanted something smaller, you might consider heading a little north to peterhead or fraserburgh...
Fraserburgh is where thomas blake glover was born and lived before moving to aberdeen, he was known as the scottish samurai and is thought to have been the inspiration for james clavell's shogun novel.
As far as the witch trials go... You could do worse than picking up a copy of the malleus maleficarum ( http://www.malleusmaleficarum.org/ has the text online i believe )

The 'Mythical State of Jefferson", comes from the station identification for the local public radio family of stations, Jefferson Public Radio.
Without going into the 'no-man's land' of political discussion, the State of Jefferson, itself, is a region that often feels disenfranchised (at worst) or overlooked (at best) by the elected governments in Salem and Sacramento.

Derbyshire, in a small town called Matlock close to the Peak District, which would, I imagine be a great setting for paranormal stories. Originally from Fife in Scotland. Regret I'm not great on local history in either place though.

from Chicago. I can't help with the background, but I just downloaded a sample of your book to my Kindle. Amazon shows it out of print in paperback.

Arial,
Welcome from St. Louis, MO. I can offer you no assistance whatsoever, but I applaud you for for your research. That alone gives me incentive to read the first book in this series.
I have a personal friend who is on the best seller list. I think that she is there because of research and uniqueness.
Personally, I am very weary of vampire books/stories. It is the "soup du jour" right now. I'm sick of vampires. Every time I turn around, there is another vampire book. I am an avid reader, generally of nonfiction, but I give a lot of stuff a chance.
Please be different. I will read the first of your series, as it sounds terribly interesting. But as a reader, all I ask is that you do your own thing after knowing where so many others have failed. I hope to have your collection in my bookcase.
