Kilted on Scooter?

I'm known to use rare earth magnets and use then to pin my kilt across the top of the tank...

While I would not personally venture wearing a kilt on any two-wheeler, I can vouch for the fact that Piperjames (James McGowan, who lives in Cape Town) goes to piping gigs on his motorbike, wearing the kilt tucked under him.

Well, I've been riding since I was eleven (a very long time ago) and I would highly recommend not wearing a Kilt while riding a Scooter or whatever two wheeled vehicle. But, perhaps not for the obvious reasons. I just think that any distraction however small is an invitation to disaster on a motorcycle. Worrying about "flashing" everyone, grabbing an apron to get it back under control, fighting some errant pleats, touching a bare leg against something hot, or, checking yourself out as you are being checked out, etc. could all lead to that split second of distraction that could kill you. Cool idea. Cute in the movies. But, IMHO highly dangerous. BTW, congrats on the scooter!

I'm gonna have to base this response on what I've seen women do on various two-wheeled contraptions, since I have a lot more experience observing and talking to them about it.

Motorcycles - behind/straddling the driver. No chance of being immodest!

Bicycles - The most modest suggestion that I've heard involved a longish swishy skirt (perhaps a little below knee length), where the bottom of the back of the skirt was brought between the legs and tucked in the front as one would tuck in the front of a shirt. This would probably work in a kilt but would look horrible and aside from keeping you "modest" would show more leg than you otherwise might be comfortable with.

Scooters - I vote no. Aside from an ankle-length skirt, or pants/leggings/tights of some sort being worn underneath, you're going to be flashing people. There have been numerous threads that reference what people *think* they see up a kilt when in fact there are undies under there, and it's what they think they see that is going to be the distraction to drivers. I don't want anyone distracted on top of actively trying to kill me when I'm on two wheels.

I wonder if a bungee cord would help hold down the apron, though.

I think that just riding one is a safety issue and riding one with bare legs and with a great piece of cloth flapping around just begging to get caught in the tires and the engine sounds like an invitation to the ER. Just my humble opinion.

I'll have to try the bungee cord idea sometime... But if you don't take ANY precautions, then yes. You WILL look like the guy in the Utilikilt "Call Me" mockumercial.

Motorbikes and scooters are a bit different. I also can't speak for other styles of scooter, but I'd have to be riding pretty stupidly to get anything caught on anything. Kilts just aren't long enough to get snagged if you are riding normally, and not like a Cossack showing off on a horse...

But even with something longer, I see women wearing long skirts and dresses on scooters on the streets all the time (including me own wife) and I've not seen or heard of such an incident where something would get caught in a wheel or engine... I think it has a lot to do with the riding style -- you don't straddle a scooter like you do a motorbike. You also have, what's essentially a wind shield in front of your legs, and the engine compartment is enclosed.

In this opinion, some occasions and activities are best attended and performed in a conventional, bifurcated lower garment.

Rode a motorcycle in a kilt. Once. Almost wrecked several times trying to keep things tucked in.

I know a scooter is a slightly different riding position but I think a kilt is too short and too full to really allow you to wear it comfortably.

Just wear trousers on the scooter, and when get to your destination wrap your kilt around your waist and drop your pants. THAT will get some attention! (Just make sure you do it in that order.)
