brogues?

I found these at a thrift store today, and at first i thought they were ghillie brogues but they don't have the long laces and they have a tongue. though the patterning looks the same or at least very similar. so even if they arnt ghillie brogues, what are they and do you think if i got longer laces they could pass for brogues, until i could afford a real nice pair?? priced right at only $3.99. they were also a perfect fit, i was wearing thick hiking socks.

They're plain ordinary brogues, called "wingtips" in the U.S. In my opinion, they're more appropriate to normal kiltwear unless you're a dancer or piper, so shine 'em up and smile! Great with any suit and tie too, or with casual slacks and a polo shirt, or anything in-between. Stylish and dressy.

Those are plain old basic wingtips lad. They will work just fine with a good shine. And without long laces are far easier to tie.

Yup, polish 'em up and wear them with normal laces. They will work just fine with the kilt.

Ditto all the above. If you polish them yourself (not taking them to a cobbler) use really high quality shoe polish - Kelly's if you can get it.

I had to look up Kelly's online. I've been shining boots and shoes for the better part of two decades and I'd never heard of it. I've always used Kiwi and Lincoln brand polishes. I see that Kelly's is made with Carnauba wax...what is Kiwi or Lincoln made with...and what makes Carnauba "better", as it were?

To be clear, I'm not doubting your knowledge or advice...I really want to know. Am I correct in assuming that you have some experience as a shoe guy, etc?

I had to look up Kelly's online. I've been shining boots and shoes for the better part of two decades and I'd never heard of it. I've always used Kiwi and Lincoln brand polishes. I see that Kelly's is made with Carnauba wax...what is Kiwi or Lincoln made with...and what makes Carnauba "better", as it were?

The carnauba wax as used in shoe polish acts as a protective coating extending the life of the leather.

Longhunter74, I use Kiwi for my shoes and boots as well (did my first spit shine more than four decades ago.) I use their Parade Gloss polish, which they claim has more carnauba wax than regular paste polish.

I also use kiwi for my combat boots, when i actually feel like polishing them. always liked the way it looks. unfortunately my shine kit is back in Massachusetts so i may have to get a new one to polish up these new brogues, just went and picked them up today, i couldn't pass up a great deal on a great fitting shoe!

Those are Johnston Murphys--great shoe! They can be resoled several times and take a shine very well. I used to wear nothing but JMs wth suits and casual slacks. Nice find!

• 4-Diethylaminoazobenzene
• Carnauba Wax
• Stoddard Solvent
• 1, 2, 4-Trimethyl Benzene
• Solvent Black 7 (Nigrosin)

I've used nothing but Kiwi shoe polish since I started shining my own shoes (about age 10 or so). Dad got tired of doing it as often as they needed it, so he showed me how. I've never tried the Parade Gloss (never really needed to, though).
