I have a two-strap kilt and a three-strap kilt and have always preferred the fit of the three-strap kilt.

I never put a third buckle/strap on my personal kilts and I try to discourage any of my customers from choosing the option as well.

Most of the time it is pulled too tight and causes the apron to look distorted with a 'scalloped' effect near the strap.

I've also noticed that it can interfere with a sporran strap. (Depending on how you wear your sporran, of course.)

I noticed yesterday that something similar was happening to my kilt - I have lost a stone and minimised my waist in the morning, showing off.

By mid afternoon I was thinking that a bit of letting out would be a good idea and saw the aprons had taken on odd angles.

Perhaps in a little while I will be able to use that notch on the belt without needing to readjust after lunch.

Well, I like the third buckle. We're told the third strap and buckle is just a traditional holdover from when kilts were made with a higher rise, or for the military etc.. I'm sure this is correct, but there are other things about kilt fashion that are maybe not really as 'necessary' as they are decorative and/ or traditional, but we still use because of fashion or tradition like flashes, kiltpins, sigan duh, waist belts...

The complaint one usually hears is that they "pull my apron to the right" etc..I guess that can be true, but only to the degree that you tighten the strap up. I buckle mine loosely, I don't "tighten" it at all, it just sort of sits there.

One practical comment, All my kilts have the left edge of the apron sewn down to the fell, same as the pleats. I figure if the lower strap was not there on the right to balance that out, I can see where the apron might want to skew left eventually.
