The cloth is on the loom and well into the weaving; the off the the finishers. I'd hope to have it in 2-3- weeks and then can start sorting out individual wnats.

No, not Tullibardine but an unname C18th piece. Not sure exactly where the museum acquired it.

    Thanks for the information, Peter!

With regard to the booklet I previously mentioned about the tartan suit of a prominent English Jacobite, the suit belonged to Sir John Hynde Cotton of Maddingley and was given him by his Scottish friends when he visited Edinburgh in 1744 and was granted the freedom of the city. The suit and Sir John's targe are on display at the Museum of Scotland; a photo of the display is at http://www.rampantscotland.com/visit/blvisitmuseum5.htm.

Great to hear that figheadair! Looking forward to it my friend.

I might have missed something, though I read the thread and read Peter's article on the Culloden coat: what is the connexion between WOB and the coat?

There is none other than most people seem to prefer the WoB colouration for a re-weave.

Ah, so it is a "reweave of the original" in terms of the sett, but not of the colours.

I suppose we can't know exactly what the colours looked like when that fabric was originally woven. Could WOB colours have faded to produce the fabric as it now stands?

Interesting question. We have an original Wilson's of Bannockburn sample book on display at the museum, virtually opposite the Culloden coat. The colours in the book are still bright and vibrant, but of course they haven't actually been worn outdoors in the Scottish weather.

We can get a pretty good idea of what the original shades were like by examining sections that were not exposed to direct light and wear, in the seams for example. For the most part WoB shades could have faded to what we now have in the coat; the darker shade of blue in the original coat being the obvious exception as lndigo doesn't fade the way other dyes do and so there is no transition from one to the other.

This is intersting news. I must make tome to come down and examine it. Is there a list of the patterns it contains?
