Mainly, I guess what all of us should remember is that many tartans are now associated with a particular family or group, regardless of how that association originated, and some people take this very seriously, some to the point of believing in exclusive rights.

Does history or law back this up? Of course not, as several of our members have demonstrated. Do some people still have strong feelings about appropriateness of wearing certain tartans? That's just as obviously true.

An example of this feeling is how some members of a military unit feel when they see someone (outside of the military) wearing their distinctive clothing or decorations when the other person isn't "qualified" to wear them. In this case, although the feelings may be strong, there is nothing illegal going on (excluding a few outstanding cases).

As long as we wear a tartan with knowledge and respect, most people will not have a problem. But we must recognize that others will. That shouldn't stop us from wearing the tartan. But it should make us stop and think a little when we make our choices, and hopefully engourage us to educate ourselves a little more.

I can tell you all that mac is just winding us all up, hes got faceless experts he wont name, rules from out of thin air, internet websites that stretch credibility to the limit and he been very rude to recognised and respected experts like Matt Newsome. using the excuse that because Matt resides in the US he has no idea about Scots culture yet with breathtaking hipocracy doesnt reside in Scotland himself!!!
He claims to be a Scot yet constantly uses the phrase "Scottish" to describe himself -this is a dead giveaway! He may be of scots descent but his attitude is strictly non-Scots, 99.9999% of Scots are thrilled that Scots culture has travelled the world and that Scots and people of Scots descent around the world still wear the kilt with pride. NO-ONE has the right tell tell another what they can and cant wear- what Mac wants is the return of the Highland dress act!! he should read his history books. and he should learn that debate isnt about disrespect, ignorance and bad manners, its about facts!!

Seems that you have a hard time backing any of your statements with real facts. Do you write for Newsweek on the side? Or have you helped Dan Rather break any news stories lately?

I would be curious if your cyber-buddy would back your liberal use of him as your expert in an open debate. Invite him into the thread to back you up.

I don't know if this has been addressed in any other threads (my reading has been haphazard the last week or two), but has anyone noticed the similarities between Mac-wotsisname and Mcnanook from the Bravehearts forum? I've thought this from the first post of his that I read. If it's not him, then it's his virtual twin brother. The guy tends to engage in destructive rather than constructive dialog, will argue about anything, and always acts as though his viewpoint is the only truth there is.

I've not visited Bravehearts in a long time, so I'm not familiar with this McNanook jerk. If it has attempted to transfer operations to this locale under a different handle, looks like he's getting the bums rush.

Fact is, I'd not be offended to hear that Hank has banned him if he hasn't had the nerve to answer his questions, and the challenge Brian and I issued by Monday. I think he's just some sort of instigator intent on stirring crap!
And I don't think he is doing it for the good of the group.

That's about the dumbest thing I have heard all week!

If we are going to start banning people for having different opinions, than maybe all the people that push their gun and religious beliefs have to go as well. There have been a number of posts attacking one member (who if you read back wasn't half as nasty as some of you lot have been). Should we ban people that defend Utilikilts as real kilts because this is called Xmarks the SCOT, and those are American kilts?

I have disagreed with a good number of people on here at some point or another, what did I do, ask for them to be banned if they don't answer questions by a certain date? No, I ignored them.

I have exchanged PMs with Mac, as we are in the same province and share a family name. He is a decent guy, and has decided to avoid Xmarks for awhile based on the hostility. I don't blame him. In terms of an un-named source, it was never implied by Mac that his source was an authority to defend his claims. You guys changed that for an attack point. He said his friend knew very little about Scottish culture, yet was in a position to teach it to others.

It's really nice that people have come to defend Matt's status as an authority, but as Matt himself pointed out, sometimes people have some pretty deep routed beliefs (true or not) and it's hard to convince them otherwise. Just Ignore it.

How about some tolerance for differing opinons guys?

I am not here defending Mac or his posts, but I am very disappointed with the "calling you out" old west attitude that has followed. Two wrongs don't make a right.

I'm not going to ban him for having a strong opinion. If I set THAT president then there would be a lot of banned folk here. At least he is on topic. I think we have probably run him off anyway...

EDIT: I guess I was posting this as Colin posted that above. I have to agree with Colin. If Mac was the worst thing to ever happen to X Marks then we would never have any probs.

And I tried changing the name a couple of times but you guys were set with X Marks!
