Dunbar, John Telfer. History of Highland Dress. Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, 1962.
Those two should give you quite a bit of information. I've got both on my shelf, here.

After bogging my eyes with this thread, since there is SO MUCH TO READ, I have a question...
Is there a problem in wearing a kilt in a tartan that you respect? I am an American, so I guess what I am accostomed to is people wearing shirts, jerseys, an items of favorite sport teams, groups (NYPD or NYFD), or organizations (PETA, NORML) they may not necessarily be a member of, but respect? Tradition is tradition, but the world is changing.
I own an MLB Padres jersey although I cannot remember ever cheering for them and I am not from San Diego. I am a fan of various bands that I own a T-shirt depicting them.
Since kilt represent eras, bands, clans, and events, is it wrong to wear a tartan out of honor?
May be a very Americanized way of thinking, though.
That said, I completely agree with Rocky's first post.

well... that's well said, but I wasn't talking wothout respect for the sarong. Of course I know it's also a men's garment in Polinesia and other areas on the Pacific Ocean, and for sure a new zealand's maori dancing the Haka at ur face is quite masculine, and provokes respect and all that, but I was just talking about esthetics. If u prefer me to change that, then I'll say that the typical hawaïan flowered shirts are not as well on my taste at all, even being weared by many brave sailors since many years ago! it was just a matter of what the esthetics of it moved me inside in contraposition with the kilt, just that, ok? anyway, thanks for the point, it was helpful to make me explain this and avoid other misunderstandings!
¡Salud!

P.S.: By the way... after ur visit to Rota,...what can u say about Cádiz? ;)

William Lawson ads
While way off topic here, just a note about William Lawson ads. There are several of them and most are excellent and very cleaver. They push the envelope, to say the least, but sometimes we need to laugh at ourselves. I wish there were some way to "collect" the whole series and present links here so that everyone could enjoy them and decide for themselves their merit.
From previous searches, I know that they are "out there" somewhere, but are hard to find. Generally, the most recent (and controversal) are to be found with normal searches.
Cheers!

I think Zoo Productions is the company that does their sound tracks. This page should be able to link you to a couple. Look for "Lawson's"

There's a couple more on this page.

I think that is the fundamental core of "know your tartan". Wearing a tartan out of respect is like wearing it for a family connection in my opinion. That is a very good point Jason, and one I am glad that brought up. For example, I have no connection to the MacDonald clan (that I know of), but I would wear that tartan out of respect for several close friends that are MacDonalds.

Chief's statement on tartans...
Whilst surfing the 'net today I discovered this very interesting article on the Clan McNeil's web site:
http://www.clanmacneil.ca/tartan4.htm
Also, Lady Saltoun, the Chief of the Clan Fraser, has a very nice discussion about Fraser tartans on her web site, which is one of the best out there, INMO, in defining the customs and symbols of the clan:

moved thread...
Although not technically heraldry, I have moved this thread over into the Heraldry section because of the on-going discussion of tartans officially recognised by Clan Chiefs, etc.
Cheers,
