My grandparents always turned their noses up whenever Imentioned kilts, mocking my step-father for saying he was scottish with the last name Hansen. They never bothered to ask, as his birth name was Alexander Stewart of the clan Stewart of Appin. Made me self concious, and I stopped talking, or even thinking about kilts, till my sister (not blood sister, but who cares) was to get married to a Davidson (coming up in Feb). Suddenly, I began looking at Kilts for her groom, and the old longing came back, decades of repressed desire flooded back. Now I hope Santa brings me what I asked for all those years ago finally, my own Stewart kilt.

As soon as I read your last post the above phrase jumped out at me. I think I was around 12 years old the last time my mother said that line to me. It is obvious that you are just a bit older than that. Clearly your mother has some issues to deal with. You, on the other hand, look great. Your family looks great. I applaud your courage and tenacity. In the long run it sounds like you had a good day over all.

I love that picture. I called my 16-year-old over to see your little guy in his kilted glory, and he looked and instantly said, "What a great family!" I asked him what he meant. "They just look like nice people. They love each other -- you can tell -- and they all look really comfortable with who they are."

Even though he sometimes makes me want to drink, my son is often an intelligent and amazing perceptive young man. I'm glad you made a stand. You guys look terrific.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

    Hello,

It is your life and it is your opinion , one should follow his opinion unless it harms others. In your case you are not hurting anyone you are just following what you believe, just be your self and other people should accept you as you ith:

You all look excellent! Kudos to you and yours for dressing as you wished, and doing it smartly in the process.

Wow, this is quite the thread!

It's funny how it's all come to your mother having problems with kilts. First it was that she promised your brother's family that you wouldn't wear one, but after that talk in the car and her comments when you showed up at the restaurant, it's clear that she is the one who has the issue.

Someone said as part of honouring your father and your mother that:

she is entitled to make any reasonable request she wants
I firmly believe that honouring doesn't mean giving into each and every request that your parents make. Even though the decision that you made was to go against her request, you gave the matter serious thought and looked into her request further to find that it wasn't reasonable at all. You gave your mother great respect in that regard.

I sincerely wish that my only child will be able to honour me in the same regard and be able to stand on her own two feet as well as you have done with the same respect you have shown.

-of course I'd be mad if she defied me and I would call upon the wrath of God to be visited upon her!

-ok, no I won't, I'd get over it.

    Well said!

    It's clear that a) it's a control issue, and b) it's her problem.

I would not have done anything differently. If mom had asked me nicely if I'd wear pants I'd have considered it. But demanding it and making promises to others, she can kma.

And yes family is more important than a garment, but so is respect which she showed none of to you.
