The guy who posted this actually made us think about something that we normally space out. I think that for some of us this thread has lead us to more insight on the most basic aspect of kilt weAring.
Very true!

That hasn't been my experience. People who seem to care may be trying to save me embarrassment from the people who don't care and tease or insult. Confidence and a sense of humor help when around those people. I have noticed that courage can be a byproduct of kilt wearing. Perhaps knowing that courage will follow the wearing can help those who are nervous about how they will be received first time out?

There is often an honest, caring motive behind telling someone not to wear a kilt, or come out of the closet, or date someone of another colour or ethnic/religious background, or study medieval literature (to cite a few of the "please don'ts" that those who love me have uttered), but that motive is always sadly inseparable from a sense of personal preservation: when it comes down to it, folks are most worried about their own reputation, not yours. And they tend to come around when they discover that your reputation doesn't actually suffer, or simply that what you've done actually makes you (and/or others) happy.

Because my hips are not level, if I have to wear pants (i.e. when I can't wear a kilt!), I'd prefer to wear fitted pants like the ones you describe. They're incredibly hard to find, though. The only pants I've seen that are made to wear at the waist are military surplus models and reproduction 1800s style clothing. I really like the look of 1870s style pants worn with suspenders and a linen shirt. Sadly, with modern "fashion" being what it is, this is seen by most people as being as 'kooky' as wearing a kilt. People think it's a costume. It just happens to be a costume that goes over easier here in my area of Texas.
Maybe we should both learn to sew. It really annoys me that it so hard to find trousers that actually fit to your waist.

In your comment I sense an understanding that comes from experience. Thanks for the insight, and yes, there is a happiness radius around me when I wear the kilt. And I thought it was just another article of men's clothing!

Honestly the reason i wear the kilt is because is a very nice alternative to pants, its also my heritage and they look better then pants, add a bit of color and comfort.

NewGuise:
I never actually thought of that - that my wearing a kilt might reflect badly on my family. It may well do. It's one thing if people think I'm weird, but I don't want to bring my family down.
And those things are probably said with your reputation, as well as theirs and those of other family members in mind.
And sorry, but dating someone of a different religion is just going to end in tears.

My son objected vehemently to the idea of my wearing a kilt at my wedding (a couple of years ago, to a guy from a different religious background, just by the way - a happy relationship that is more than a dozen years old). He recently looked at one of my kilts and spontaneously apologised for that objection. My entire extended family became fond of kilts the moment they saw me wear one. So ... no.
Family members and friends can take care of themselves. They are themselves, not you. You need first and foremost to be true to yourself.
