Richard, why do you feel the need to even comment on it? If you think the topic is silly, ignore it. I see lots of topics here that I find strange, and I end up rolling my eyes and moving on. But publicly poking fun at what others want to talk about will only create enmity, hard feelings, and will discourage people from having discussions. Is that what you're trying to do?

Hummm I wonder? Richard must of course speak for himself, but I wonder if he is making the point that we are scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to finding fresh kilted topics to discuss? If he is, then he is right. How many times have we talked endlessly about all sorts of minor subjects? I know I do struggle not to yawn when the same subject crops for the second time in a month and perhaps others feel the same? Of course those that are new to the website do not see it that way and it is they that are the life-blood of any website.
Perhaps this is way off topic, but we seem to be being lead this way, so if I may pursue this a tad,
I do wonder if the mods could loosen the topic constrictions a tad? Just to ring the changes? There is a downside to this, and the mods and those that have been around a while know full well that "we the Members" do have a habit of straying off course!
Just wondering.

I couldn't agree more, Jock.

There are threads here that I'm interested in and threads that I'm not. I manage to simply ignore the ones I'm not interested in without feeling a need to make snarky comments about them.
One of the things that I like about this forum is a general level of civility that's sorely lacking elsewhere on the internet, the overall tone of this thread being a disappointing exception.

I'd think questioning the mental hygiene of folks who own more than a certain number of kilts might create enmity too,

"Loosen the topic constrictions" ?? Just me, but the first post in this thread seemed a little wandering, provocative and even self contradictory, and the over 100 posts that follow have followed suit. But you are spot on about the topic barrel being a little threadbare.

Likewise! And I haven't forgotten about a new thread regarding the Macpherson 'Hunting' tartan, mate. It will be a long time coming indeed!

My take...for those of you who grew up with the kilt as part of normal, every day business...it's just part of your lives. The konverted, most of whom seem to live this side of the pond, don't have that context and wearing the kilt is still considered unusual by the mainstream here. So the konverted display some exuberance in the novelty of wearing the kind and give us the "Here I Am Doing _____ While Kilted" threads...or perhaps it's a conspiratorial thing...wearing the kilt being unusual, it's a way of giving a wink to the rest of us who wear them. I'd like to think that it's not some sort of "Here I Am Sticking It To The Man By Wearing A Kilt" thing because I personally don't feel that's an appropriate reason for wearing a kilt....I don't think it's appropriate to wear a kilt for shock value or to draw attention to one's self...I still can't get over how many people assume that I'm wearing a kilt just to stand out in the crowd and that it's some kind of middle-age "look at me" thing.
I just skip most of those threads...I tend to skip a lot of the "here's my new _____" threads, too. Unless it's of interest to me or a post by one of the members who always has something insightful or funny to say, I just skip over it...can't read ALL of these. Frankly, when a member gets too "out there", I tend to block them...if I find myself saying, "How can this guy think that this is interesting/appropriate/helpful?" more than a few times, I just block the posts...I'm sure that more than one forum member has blocked me along the way so fair's fair.
If ya' don't like it, don't read it...if the poster consistently posts things that rankle you, block them...if ya' think the whole thing is silly, go elsewhere.
If ya' feel it's your job to criticize, all I can say is that you got your two pence worth and thanks fer sharin'.
Best

Mental hygiene? Uh oh... did I accuse someone of having a dirty mind?
Point taken, though. I was trying to be delicate with my statement of not understanding the concept of owning that many kilts, and tried to make sure I communicated that it's not "wrong" at all. Quite the contrary, in fact. It's a harmless passion, and I am most adamantly a supporter of individual expression. But I am still curious what drives people to acquire what would be considered by any reasonable standard an incredibly large number of one type of garment. Is it a statement of self-identity? Is it obsession? Trust me, I do understand the ease with which one can fall into obsession. I've done it before. And it's always good for people to ask themselves whether their hobbies or interests have crossed that line. If it seems to the casual observer that it borders on obsession, perhaps it's worth some introspection, wouldn't you think?
I sincerely hope that broaching that subject would not create enmity, and if it has, I heartily apologize. It was not my intent. Rather the opposite: I think it's a good stimulus for discussion on the wearing of the kilt. A bit of a "reality check" that we can all use from time to time, perhaps?
