Very true! this is a simple hickory staff from West Virginia:

... and this, a classic Irish blackthorn. Come to think of it, it's a favorite, too! But I gotta get some kilt hose on this model---please ignore the pasty-white legs (guess who hasn't been to the beach all year).

Couldn't resist. This is the "stick bin" in the hall at my home here in Vancouver. Choices for the day's walk in the woods n' mountains.

Looks like it might have some heft to it, and provide more than adequate protection from stray dogs & pickpockets
It has a siver tip with a rubber end, I'll get a shot of it when I get home, and yes it does have some heft to it but not too much.

It arrived today and I hastily took these photos.

VERY handsome piece of kit! Looks like an excellent purchase.

I have proof that you are correct. A fellow called Gregor from Taynuilt is a frequent visitor to the bar at the Brander Lodge where I stayed last July. Not knowing me, but knowing I was going to do one Munro (Ben Cruachan), Gregor made a quicky hazelwood walker for me. The nice fellow got a dram from me in thanks.

Although it passed the rule of thumb, I beat no wife with it.

Attention anyone that's interested in obtaining an Irish blackthorn walking stick...

LollySmith.com just got a new batch of Pug's Ugly walking sticks cut from Irish blackthorns with "root knob" handles. The cool thing about their site is that they name and post a pic of each stick individually along with it's stats (diameter, length, knob description). That way you get to choose the exact blackthorn that you want and know what it will look like.

They posted over 20 blackthorns on their site at 8pm tonight (Oct. 31) and I was lucky enough to get first dibs. All but one of them sold out in just a few hours. They will be posting the next bunch online on Saturday (Nov. 1) evening at 10pm EST. Their blackthorns range in price from about $39.00 to about $49 which is a pretty decent price. They also only charge exact shipping cost without adding a handling fee. Plus, they offer ferrules and rubber tips for a small additional fee.

    Check them out here: http://www.lollysmith.com/irblwast2.html

Remember, they sell out fast so be sure to visit the site tomorrow night at 10pm EST if you want one.

Here's the last one available from the first batch...

I always liked cromachs myself. I have not seen a single blackthorn stick yet though, rabble, I am shocked at your behaviour! Does nobody own one of these lovely pieces of blackthorn?
