I've been frantically seraching MapQuest for directions to Muscat becasue it appears that Lochlan needs company to catalog--and sample?--his stock.
Can I get there without going through Albequerqie?
My new favorite is Lagavulin, but for less expensive but still pretty smoky, I also buy Highland Park.

Actually, starting today, my whiskies will have to be untouched by me !
I have started a diet (the fat-burning soup diet) and alcohol is now off menu. Drats and double-drats !!
Maybe on my "banana" day, I can have some banana beer that someone posted on !
I'll fit into my kilt again or die ! Typical, just as Burger King is about to open their first branch in Oman for 8 years !

I came back from Inverness with a suitcase full, after making the rounds. I'm no expert, yet find I have made friends with Bunnahabhain 18 yr (a third vote here). A gentler Islay but still a drink with character and likeability.

Aberlour double cask. If you like the bit of sweetness (which I do) it's very nice.

I was "window shopping" the Scotch aisle in a local liquor store yesterday. Saw that they now carry Yamazaki. I didn't notice the word "Scotch" on the label, they list it as a single malt liquor. At the risk of sounding heretical, I may pick up a bottle to try. Might even be good for brownie points at home, being that my bride's name is Sumiko
I'm usually a Lagavulin drinker, but I recently picked up a bottle of the Yamazaki 12 yr old. I must say, it definitely holds its own with any of the single malts in my collection.
I know wikipedia is a poor reference....but as to why it's not called scotch...
To be called Scotch whisky the spirit must conform to the standards of the Scotch Whisky Order of 1990 (UK),[3] which clarified the Scotch Whisky Act 1988,[4] and mandates that the spirit:
1. Must be distilled at a Scottish distillery from water and malted barley, to which only other whole grains may be added, have been processed at that distillery into a mash, converted to a fermentable substrate only by endogenous enzyme systems, and fermented only by the addition of yeast,
2. Must be distilled to an alcoholic strength of less than 94.8%[4] by volume so that it retains the flavour of the raw materials used in its production,
3. Must be matured in Scotland in oak casks for no less than three years and a day,
4. Must not contain any added substance other than water and caramel colouring, and
5. May not be bottled at less than 40% alcohol by volume.

I have been through the one bottle of Lagavulin I had as well as my Oban, and must restock those ASAP. I have several duplicate bottles of stuff I already have open, so my total comes out to right around 70 bottles. Should keep me happy for a few years.
I have a few other american bourbon whiskeys (I do live in Kentucky) but they are in a whole different class being made from corn mash rather than malted barley.

Jeff, I have about 24 brands in about 30 bottles. Where do you put yours? I finally figured out to line them up on top of the kitchen cabinets.
