Horses non sunt disputandem, or something like that...
I think you might be right here.
We do also need to question whether the photo accurately represents the material of the hose, as certain colours and patterns MAY be present, but might not be discernible under the harsh flash of a camera.

Has anyone given thought to the possibility that HRH was dressing to match his wife’s green outfit when he chose those socks?
The picture shows them as being black, light grey and light green, but I suspect that the “black” is actually tartan green, and so complements the Duchess’s outfit very well indeed. All he needed was the red flashes to “tie” the socks to his kilt.

Mike

That's a good point, although it doesn't look like a very good match to her colors from the photo (which may be skewed by the camera flash). It does appear, though, that the green in his hose almost perfectly match the green stripes in his kilt.
All he needed was the red flashes to “tie” the socks to his kilt.
I may be mistaken, but I think I do see red on his right leg.

Maybe we could blame the matching on his valet. Does he use one?

Yes, he does, but he isn't dressed without awareness. I must say I'm quite uncomfortable with the criticism of his choice of hose. He is always and in all ways an exceptionally well-turned-out gentleman and the fact that some here and in the media disapprove of his looks in a single photo is just so much horsefeathers. People who live in stone houses should not throw glass.

My exact sentiments, Rex. I fail to see anything to complain about in the photo of Prince Charles. The hose look absolutely fine to me. Prince Charles knows how to wear the kilt--and all that goes with it--in the way it is traditionally worn. I laugh at the nay-sayers.

funny innit?
I mean Rothesay is smartly turned out and people are taking pot shots at him. But if one were to take a shot at the white socks brigade....

If I may interject here, I think it's partially BECAUSE Rothesay is always so impeccably turned out that when something, no matter how minute, jars the eye in his outfits, it becomes the focus.
As I said earlier, we should consider the lighting and the flash photography into the equation, as the shot looks HEAVILY artificially lit.
It's not that his choice of hose is bad, it's just that it doesn't seem to 'flow' quite as wonderfully as I'd expect from him, the most splendid kilted dresser that he is.
BTW: I now save my ammunition normally directed at the "white hose" brigade. Their bunkers are too thick.

Calling all competents...Mayday
Almost a year ago there was a thread called MONTROSE MULTIPLEX, featuring my velvet montrose, made by my dear sweet mother. Post number 17 shows me wearing said doublet, along with a RS kilt and red-and-blue argyle hose. If some wise and kind person will post that picture here, perhaps alongside the one of the Duke, we might see why he opted against red hose. Or at least everybody can see that my date is younger than the Duke's.

Your wish is my command.
I think you look great! (the date doesn't hurt either).
BTW: your Montrose fills me with envy.
