I hope not, because I do it all the time! Either a panama or a tilly hat or something similar.

Ya, that's true. I bet that canvas saffari hat I have might go with my canvas kilt.
I do all I can to stay out of the sun including working outside in the evening and night... Bothers the neighbors.

There are always experts! Take a look at Monarch of the Glenn and see Golly (I believe that's how it's spelt) and how often and with what diverse clothing he wears the balmoral. Also see So You're going to wear the Kiltwhen it is suggested to start by wearing the balmoral as a way of working your way in to wearing the kilt.

One of these days I should get a balmoral. I might get a tam too. I don't think I want to wear a glengary though. Just a personal thing.
There's been threads and talk of the newsboy eight pannel hats with kilts. To me, they are all in the same gist of hat... Kind of flat and low on the top, instead of beetle bug shaped.

I have been looking at the flat caps (aka ivy or driving caps) and I want one. I've never worn a tam and I have a glengary but can never seem to get it to stay on my head in the wind here in Seattle. Amazon has a nice selection of the newsboy caps and a friend of mine has ordered one for herself, I'll have to look at it when it arrives. I wish I had known about all of these choices back when I started wearing the kilt.

I was thinking... One of those shallow straw hats with the wide flat brims would probably go well with a kilt. I think of the Caribian and beaches connected with those kind of hats, but I think they would be fine with a kilt for some reason. I don't even know what they are called.

This present day Scot agrees with those thoughts too.
