D is just another colour they sent along. The tartan is three greens (from black green to acid green) and the purple.
I was hoping they'd send a few of each for some selection, but we may simply be limited by stock yarns.
Drac: I don't know what system they use for 'colour matching' at Dalgliesh...
It may simply be that these colours don't exist without custom dyeing. I'll contact them again to try and clear things up further.

Do they use PM systems?
If so I can see if my wife can get the correct numbers.

Scott, one thing you might consider is asking them to send some sample of actual tartans that contain various greens. In the past I got different tartans with different ranges of colours, and it was a little easier to judge the colours as well when they were actually woven.

Even though the yarns don't appear to be "spot on" I still like the overall design and I think the overall effect will be quite lovely once woven. If I COULD make ammendments, I MIGHT recommend that A be a touch greyer, and B just be a little bit greener.
My own mind's eye visualizes a tartan that represents both Cthulhu-like color, but also a misty, dark, mysterious, almost sinister background (but at the same time, not black).
In any event, depending on the artist, palette and the exact representation will vary somewhat and it comes down to personal preference. For me, I'm geeked to get a Cthulhu tartan either way... It's going to look great, IMO.
Here's some various Cthulhu pix to help everyone's mind focus... :-)

(Sorry. Looks like Imageshack is cacked atm. <sigh>. Okay. Here's a GIS for "Cthulhu"

I agree, it is disappointing, but this is half the fun of developing your own tartan.
I think at the yardage we're looking at, maybe some of the other big mills would be interested in weaving for us?
As for the samples - A is completely off. I'd put B at A, put C at B, and find something completely different for C. Purple is perfect
For those who understand, no explanation is necessary; for those who don't, none is possible.

I could live with B, C, and E. Maybe my monitors are too dark, I thought this was a black, purple, and acid green pattern, not dark green instead of black
In that case maybe A should be a touch darker and C a bit brighter/more noxious, though I think that if this is what we got then it would work for me.
But I'm starting to see the value in having the tartan registered for future reproduction, matching tartan dye is worse than matching paint!

I know a little off topic, but registering the tartan doesn't actually register the actual colours , other than black, purple, light and dark green ( for example).
There would still be leeway for variations within the actual colours. There could be advisory information included, or the tartan could be restricted to a particular weaver or only available from the registrant.
As some of us keep saying, there is no official colour chart, the choice is usually down to the weaver, which is why there is a colour variation between weavers of the same tartans. I don't think of this as a problem, but one of which it offers greatest choice for the end user
Of course Scott should have the say in what colours he wants his tartan to be in, and D C Dalgleish should be very happy to help him choose, even if it takes several sample threads

Not as far as I know. Nothing has been woven yet -- only quoted. Just post your desired DW yardage requirement... But at this point it may be wiser to simply PM Artificer so he can make sure to include you.
