I don't know if it's the "roughest", but the most unpleasant Scotch I've had was Clan MacGregor. It must be the "Mad Dog 20/20" of Scotch. As one internet pundit put it, "I'd love to describe the bouquet and taste, but it had no distinguishable characteristics other than a slight burning sensation as it went down."
For the moment, if I'm going to drink an "affordable" Scotch, I'll stick with Speyburn 10 or maybe Glenfiddich 12 or something else in that price range. I wish I could say I had tried the upper-echelon labels, but alas, I haven't won the lottery yet.

Add to the horrid list: "Inver House", sold in large green plastic bottles...!

My daughter's boyfriend bought me a glass of Walker Blue Label over the holidays. That's a very special whisky, made better in the generosity, thoughtfulness, and comraderie of its gift. I gnerally drink single malt, but that drink I'll never forget

Currently it's Jura, the one with the Ankh on it. Very smooth, SLIGHT caramel finish with absolutely no feel as it slides into the belly.
Bladenoch 16 year old is also very good.

Bun is indeed a gentle drink, unfortunately hard to find in Ontario! Even more unfortunate is the too small amount I have left!

For me, an aged Lagavulin with a Nicaraguan 6x54 Maduro cigar and about 2-3 hours to enjoy both.

McNulty, you might want to try the Lagavulin with a Macanudo Hampton Court. Nice combination to me anyway.

Sheep Dip... It was gawd ahhhfull... We had it at our clan Hogmany party last year. Doc bought it as a joke... This year, we had a bottle of genuine Tennesee moonshine- aged less than 30 days, the label boasted... That was pretty terrible too.
But to answer the original post... I personally love Highland Park 18- great stuff! It is followed very closely by Ardbeg and Craganmor. (I don't know how to spell it... Sue me! )

Greetings,
It may be the years have fuzzed my memory of it, it may be that the friends who gave it to me were near and dear or it may be that it was actually a good scotch that had a bad reputation from the elite scotch folks, but my favourite (and mind you I do not think there are bad scotches, just scotches I don't particularly care for) is a 10 yr old single malt black scotch called Loch Dhu.
It was a black scotch that had wonderful warm tones and a slight peaty flavour that went down smooth as silk. It is probably the only scotch I prefer to drink neat as opposed to with a splash of water or with a few ice cubes. You can't get it anymore except from online specialty stores I think, so I may never know if it was as good as I remember, but the memories of drinking it with friends and family are as clear as crytal.
So it may not have been the contents of the bottle that made it my favourite scotch, but the memories that came from that bottle are what made it my favourite.
With Greatest Respect,
Matt

Roughest scotch... this will either show elitist tastes, or a lack of them, but the roughest one I ever had was an aberlour 10. I must stress enough that I thoroiughly adore aberlour 12 \ 16, but the 10.......not, please no. Just too not matured enough yet.
On a related note. lagavulin. We recently got this one in the province and I can easily tell you that I love the flavor...but that's the te thing....it makes many other whiskeys taste like nothing :P

My Dad used to buy Loch Dhu years ago when you could get it around here, and it WAS damn' good. So dark you couldn't see through it! Would love to buy myself a bottle....
Edit: Whoa! Never mind. A bottle ordered on-line is 190GBP...!
