I will chime in with I wear my kilt because of pride and tradition. Not withstanding it is comfortable to wear. I don't really care what others say about it, or the way I dress, I am who I am and if I am to be criticized then to walk on this earth , that is a price I have to pay.

I almost never get any guff regardless of tartan or modern. But for everyday use it's kilt, socks and t-shirts - sometimes the Sgian Dubh. I don't even own the rest of the kit - yet.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

... Of course, if I were to be invited to additional events or social gatherings in the Lowlands, or elsewhere for that matter, where it would be acceptable and appropriate to wear the kilt (For example, at various events Scottish Highland in nature here in the USA where I live), then naturally I would. I simply choose not to wear Highland dress whilst strolling about the streets of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Linlithgow, etc....
I seem to recall you posted some lovely pictures a while back of yourself wearing full, traditional, Highland day dress while strolling about in Victoria and Vancouver, riding the ferry, etc. Isn't it grand that Canada can sometimes offer the same "license to kilt" as the Highlands Official multiculturalism at work

Indeed, Colin.
The Vancouver photos were taken en route to a birthday celebration of a good friend of mine, James Adamson, who is a proud member of the Clan Mackintosh Association and wears Highland dress frequently. The party called for the wearing of Highland attire.
The next day, we were in Victoria, en route to James' sister's college graduation party and dinner, where again, Highland dress was appropriate.
Was I "strolling" the streets and aboard a ferry whilst wearing Highland dress? Yes, quite so. Guilty as charged! However, the kilt was indeed worn for specific occassions (Otherwise, I never would have packed all of my kit!) and not in an arbitrary, ostentatious manner.
Cheers,

Question for youCreagdhubh,
Say you are going on a Med cruise ( which I am in a couple of weeks). Would you bring your kit halfway around the world to wear on 5-6 formal nights on board?
I am toying with the notion but am trying to be practical as well.
Sorry for the jack....

No worries, mate!
Personally, I would not. I would opt for a dark suit with a simple neck-tie, or perhaps black-tie, depending upon the level of formality, naturally. I have never been on a cruise (Besides U.S. Marine Corps related cruises where everyone wore the same style of clothing! ), so I am not entirely sure how the formal events are designed aboard a cruise ship.
Of course, this is my personal opinion, so please do not allow my two-pence to discourage you in any fashion. Best of luck with your decision and do let the Rabble know what you decide to do after all...and don't forget the photos!
Best wishes for a safe journey and a memorable time!

Yep, same here, be aware of updrafts when topside, especially near the bow (the pointy end - LOL). The breeze feels great though.

Formal nights on ships are a little more relaxed now-a-days. I have seen everything from a tux to kilt and bling to a tie with a windbreaker..
I am going to pack and see if I have room or not. Weight is also an issue so I thought I would opt for a 4-yarder if I have room.
Thanks
